Position Summary

The Reference Technician I/II - Public Services Technician is charged with providing high-quality customer service to library patrons at library service desks and online. They primarily provide reference and research services at the reference desk and via online chat. They also provide circulation support at the circulation desk. They occasionally conduct research in support of reference requests, collection development needs, and exhibit creation.

Pay dates occur on the 7th and 22nd of each month.  If those dates fall on a weekend, the pay date occurs on the Friday prior to the 7th and 22nd. As an employee of the college, you are eligible for a comprehensive benefits package.



In the best interest of the College, only individuals who are residents of Maryland or one of the following states will be eligible for employment at the college: Delaware, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia or the District of Columbia. Job Duties and Responsibilities

Teach students and other library patrons to effectively and ethically identify and use information resources and tools, promoting and reinforcing information literacy concepts in every transaction, face-to-face, via telephone or email, and virtual reference software. Conduct a reference interview to assess the patron's need, develop search strategies, interpret search results, and cite sources correctly. Provide extensive guidance on using APA and MLA citation. Respond to questions about library materials and services, and college services and events. Provide directional assistance to locations in the library and throughout the college

Perform duties necessary to ensure the orderly circulation of library materials, including Charging, discharging, and renewing library materials. Register new patrons and modify existing patron records. Use library system software to maintain accurate circulation records. Review and process requests for laptops and other equipment, and receive and inspect returned equipment. Respond to and process e-mail communication and requests, including library card applications. Communicate library policy and procedures to students, faculty, staff, and patrons.

Research issues in support of the work of the library, faculty, staff, college groups, and administrators, as requested, producing bibliographies, annotations, web-based guides, etc

Frequently assist library users with technical troubleshooting of software and hardware issues. Instruct patrons in the use of laptops, VCR/DVD players, photocopiers, printers, book scanners, and other equipment.

Special duties identified as 5% in the Job Functions and Responsibilities section may include: data collection, analysis and reporting; committee service; operations oversight in the absence of the supervisor; opening and closing of service area.

Required Qualifications:

REFERENCE TECHNICIAN I:
Bachelor's degree or higher
Minimum of two years of relevant experience

REFERENCE TECHNICIAN II:
Bachelor's degree or higher
Minimum of four years of relevant experience

Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Proven ability to deliver excellent customer service and to deal effectively and tactfully with all types of internal and external customers, including students, faculty, administrators, staff, and community members

Ability and willingness to work a flexible schedule as needed: primarily morning/afternoon hours, with the possibility of occasional evening or weekend shifts.

Ability to handle multiple priorities and frequent interruptions. Strategic, creative problem-solving abilities and conflict resolution skills. Ability to work effectively as a team member and to provide guidance to others.

Working knowledge of computers, including email, spreadsheets, and word processing, and the ability to type accurately at a moderate rate. Experience with and knowledge of Microsoft Office 365.

Ability to learn new technical skills to enhance performance and maintain currency with developing technologies.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience as a member of a team; Demonstrated teaching ability; Experience with Virtual Reference; Master's Degree in Library Science; Spanish language fluency
