Position Summary

The Lab Manager’s responsibilities include: coordinating and supervising the department’s stockroom functions; overseeing teaching laboratory preparation; maintenance of the department’s chemical and physical assets; placing orders for all chemicals purchased in department; and serving as the department’s safety officer.

Minimum Required Education and Experience

MS or MA in Chemistry or related field or equivalent educational experience.
Knowledge of fundamental chemistry laboratory safety precautions and procedures; Proficiency in basic computer skills to include Microsoft Word, Excel, and online forms; Demonstrate high degree of organization.

Preferred Education and Experience

Previous experience as a stockroom coordinator, laboratory technician, or other laboratory position that involved organizing inventory, preparing reagents, or teaching laboratory students. The ability to assist faculty members in regular basic maintenance of departmental instrumentation is a plus.

Job Duties

  • Maintain department Inventories (chemical & equipment/glassware). Order chemicals and supplies for teaching and research laboratories. 
  • Hire and supervise students to assist with preparing solutions and equipment for teaching laboratory exercises and maintenance/stocking of the teaching laboratories. 
  • Provide support for Chemistry faculty and student research, Chemistry Club, and outreach activities, including ordering. 
  • Manage the budget for stockroom purchases for teaching laboratory courses and research; this will involve multiple budget lines from departmental accounts and individual student research grants. 
  • Prepare solutions and equipment for teaching laboratory exercises. 
  • Set up teaching laboratories for student use. 
  • Maintain and stock the teaching laboratories and stockroom. 
  • Management and disposal of waste generated in teaching laboratory and student/faculty research. 
  • Ensure departmental compliance applicable safety regulatory agencies. 
  • Organize monthly laboratory safety training for undergraduate student workers and researchers. 
  • Organize regular maintenance of safety-related equipment such as ventilation hoods, eye-washes and safety showers. 
  • Collaborate with others to maintain the department SDS files, including the SDS online folder. 
  • The successful candidate will also attend the University Safety Committee meetings, become familiar with OSHA regulations, and be appointed to the University IACUC.
