Summary:  The Department of Communication Disorders at New Mexico State University invites applications for the position of College Assistant Professor in American Sign Language/Deaf Studies. The candidate to fill this full-time, 9-month position will oversee the newly created minor in American Sign Language, teach courses in American Sign Language, Deaf Culture, and Deaf Community, as well as working on curricular design and program evaluation in collaboration with the department head.

Classification Summary:
The Department of Communication Disorders at New Mexico State University invites applications for the position of College Assistant Professor in American Sign Language/Deaf Studies. The candidate to fill this full-time, 9-month position will oversee the newly created minor in American Sign Language, teach courses in American Sign Language, Deaf Culture, and Deaf Community, as well as working on curricular design and program evaluation in collaboration with the department head.
The Communication Disorders department at NMSU (https://cd.nmsu.edu/) offers a diverse, dynamic and welcoming learning and working environment. Faculty within the department are expected provide service to the department, college and university.

Classification Standard Duties:
1. Teach four courses in ASL (I, II, III, or IV), Deaf Culture and/or Deaf Community per semester
2. Schedule classes in the ASL minor and identify qualified adjunct faculty for ASL class offerings
3. Actively participate in departmental, college, and university service activities

Required Education, Experience, Certification/License, Equivalency
Minimum of a Master’s degree in American Sign Language (ASL), Deaf Studies, Deaf Education, or Teaching ASL, or a master’s degree in a related field with a minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in American Sign Language (ASL), Deaf Studies, Deaf Education, or Teaching ASL.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
1. Experience teaching sign language in an educational setting
2. Post-secondary teaching experience is preferred
3. Experience developing curricula and instructional materials for sign language courses
4. Familiarity with assistive technologies used by the deaf and hard of hearing community
5. Strong communication and interpersonal skills
