Summary:  Join the NMSU R1 Research Office

Classification Summary:
Oversee the operations of the support units in the Research division. Assist and advise VP for Research in the administration and budget, development and promotion of the division. Assist with development of appropriate policies, procedures, operations and systems to accomplish university goals in research. Serves on the leadership team of the VP for Research.

Classification Standard Duties:
Administer the operations of the support units in the Research division, including (but not limited to) those dealing with research development, grant and contract administration, research integrity and compliance with regulations and agreements, information technologies, and administration and finance. Assist the VP for Research with the administration and evaluation of programs, and the determination of priorities based on resources. Develops and evaluate operating procedures and policies. Develop and implement budgetary controls and related management reporting. Participate in senior management. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education, Experience, Certification/License, Equivalency
Required Education: Master's degree in a related field.; Required Experience: Six (6) years of increasingly progressive management experience in two or more areas that report to this position; Equivalency: None; Required Certification/License: None

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
KNOWLEDGE: Knowledge and understanding of the mission, goals, organization and operational/financial infrastructure of a public university. Knowledge and understanding of institutional policies and procedures and the regularity environment in which they operate, as they pertain to research. Knowledge and understanding of federal and state laws and regulations regarding university research.; SKILLS: Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community. Strong strategic planning, analytical, critical thinking, and decision making skills. Organizational planning, structuring, and staffing skills.; ABILITIES: Ability to foster a cooperative work environment. Ability to develop, plan, and implement short- and long-range goals and objectives. Ability to review and assess proposed, new and existing regulations and agreements.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
The Assc. VP, Research Administration oversees the Research Administration division which includes, research development, pre-award and non-financial post-award administration, and research integrity and compliance (e.g., proposal development, grants and contracts, animal care). While reporting directly to the Vice President for Research, this position will manage day-to-day operations of the Research unit, will advise and actively participate in major decisions regarding research within the unit and campus-wide, be responsible for Research budgets, and provide technical and regulatory direction to VPR and Administration.

Preferred Qualifications

The best candidate will demonstrate their experience in spoken and written communications, prioritization, influence, and negotiation. Additionally, the best candidate will have experience with the implementation of electronic research administration systems.
