Summary: The Civil Engineering Department at New Mexico State University invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant/ Associate Professor level, with appointment starting Spring 2026. The department seeks applicants from the following subdisciplines: Geotechnical, Structural, Water Resources, and Environmental Engineering.
Classification Summary:
The New Mexico State University Civil Engineering Department offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees. The NMSU Civil Engineering faculty are dedicated to excellence in teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as in our research endeavors. Class sizes are small, often between twenty and forty students. The faculty have active research programs in the general areas of structures, geotechnical, water, environmental, and transportation engineering.
Classification Standard Duties:
Successful applicants must demonstrate the ability to contribute to the mission of the Civil Engineering Department in teaching, research, and service. The specific responsibilities of the position include teaching 50% of the workload (usually 6 credit hours per semester), research for 25% of the workload, and service for 25% of the workload. Teaching is to be some combination of undergraduate and graduate courses, both online and on-campus from existing curriculum and new courses created in an applicant’s specialty. Research activities will be specific to the successful candidate, but these activities are expected to produce external funding and archival publications. Service activities will include student advising/mentoring and other service to the department, college, and university.
Required Education, Experience, Certification/License, Equivalency
Bachelor’s and PhD degrees in Civil Engineering or closely related fields are required.
Professional licensure, or the ability to become licensed within five years, is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
The tenure-track candidate needs to show potential to aggressively leverage opportunities at the state and federal levels, to develop and grow an impactful and sustainable research program. All candidates are expected to teach undergraduate and graduate level courses. The candidates should demonstrate a plan for successful collaborations with other faculty, both inside and outside NMSU, that fosters cross-disciplinary research.

• Advising students at the undergraduate and graduate levels
• Participating in CE shared governance processes and service activities

c. Robotic-enabled remote inspection and maintenance.
d. Sensing integration and autonomous, adaptive data sampling.
2. System Integration and Optimization of Infrastructure Information:
a. Infrastructure informatics.
b. Spatial data analytics.
c. Data visualization for decision-making.
d. Asset Management.
3. Material Systems:
a. AI-assisted material discovery and design.
b. Interdisciplinary application development (civil, aerospace, medical, etc.).
c. Innovative materials and manufacturing processes.
d. Self-healing materials for civil infrastructure.
4. Clean Energy, Water and Environmental Systems:
a. Clean energy production such as hydrogen, geothermal, and carbon sequestration.
b. Energy harvesting from human activities and civil infrastructure.
c. System modeling and optimization of energy-water-environment sustainability
d. AI-enabled energy, water, environmental systems including sensors and digital twins.
