Job Summary/Basic Functions

We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as the Director of Environmental Health/Safety. The Director provides strategic, university-wide leadership in establishing and overseeing plans, procedures, and policies pursuant to federal, state, and local regulations, guidelines, and industry-based best practices intended to eliminate or reduce work-related injuries and environmental pollution. The Director works to ensure compliance and continuous improvement in health and safety programs for students, faculty, and staff. The Director provides support to departments in facilitating their efforts to integrate health and safety into daily operations and planning.

Required KSAs/Competencies/Qualifications

  • Demonstrated understanding of federal, state, and local codes and regulations and policies related to environmental health and safety in higher education settings.
  • Demonstrated ability to formulate policies and procedures compliant with federal, state, and local regulations and in support of the institution’s environmental health and safety.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of environmental health and safety “best practices” in higher education.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with stakeholders to develop, implement, and assess their environmental and health safety planning and programs.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use life and occupational safety systems, including related computer systems and software applications.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in an educational environment with faculty, staff, and students.
  • Ability and willingness to respond to emergencies and incidents on an on-call, 24/7 basis.
  • Skilled in establishing effective partnerships and working relationships with UMW stakeholders and external representatives including those from local, state, and federal governmental agencies.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing, including preparing and presenting accurate, complete, and detailed reports and other documentation.
  • Develop and maintain a positive and professional attitude in communication with all constituents, including students, faculty, and staff.
  • Strong technological skills.

 

Required Experience:

  • Progressively responsible leadership experience in an environmental health and safety position.
  • Experience with organizations with multiple priorities, including hazardous waste management, fire inspection, radiation safety, asbestos abatement, industrial hygiene, laboratory safety, occupational health and safety.

 

Additional Considerations:

  • Certification courses in hazardous waste management, hazardous materials handling, fire inspection, radiation safety, asbestos abatement, and industrial hygiene.
  • National Incident Management Systems and Incident Command System (NIMS and ICS) certifications.
  • Credentialing through the National Environmental Health Association, certifications in hazardous materials management.
