Department Summary

The University of North Texas TRIO Talent Search Program, housed within Orientation and Transition Programs, is a federally funded college-access program serving eligible middle and high school students in Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD. The program supports students who are first-generation college-bound and/or from limited-income backgrounds through academic advising, tutoring resources, college and career exploration, financial literacy education, campus visits, and assistance with college admissions and financial aid. Working in partnership with students, families, and HEB ISD schools, the program helps participants successfully complete high school and prepare for postsecondary education or career training.

Position Overview

The University of North Texas TRIO Talent Search Program serving Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD is seeking a part-time Ambassador to support middle school students as they prepare for high school and postsecondary education.

Working alongside TRIO Talent Search staff, the Ambassador will assist with academic support, tutoring, goal setting, college and career awareness, group facilitation, and student-engagement activities. The Ambassador will help recruit and engage eligible participants, provide social and academic support, assist with workshops, campus visits, field trips, and family events, and help document student participation and services.

This position will interact with students, families, school personnel, and program staff to help participants develop the academic skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to complete high school and pursue college, career training, or other postsecondary opportunities.

Minimum Qualifications

Current enrollment in or completion of an associate or bachelor’s degree program, preferably in education, counseling, social work, human development, or a related field.
Experience working with middle school students in an educational, mentoring, tutoring, nonprofit, or youth-serving environment.
Experience providing tutoring, academic support, group facilitation, or college and career awareness activities.
Previous participation in or experience working with a federal TRIO program.
Experience supporting first-generation college-bound students and students from limited-income backgrounds.
Familiarity with HEB ISD or the surrounding community.
Experience using Microsoft Office, student databases, social media, or other digital communication tools.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of student development, academic support, mentoring, and college-access practices.
Knowledge of the educational needs of middle school students, particularly students who are first-generation college-bound or from limited-income backgrounds.
Knowledge of professional standards related to student confidentiality and accurate recordkeeping.
Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
Effective advising, mentoring, presentation, and group-facilitation skills.
Strong organizational, time-management, problem-solving, and attention-to-detail skills.
Ability to establish positive, supportive relationships with students from various backgrounds.
Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with students, families, school personnel, community partners, and program staff.
Ability to plan and deliver age-appropriate academic, college-awareness, career-exploration, and financial-literacy activities.
Ability to maintain accurate student records and document services, participation, and progress in a program database.
Ability to manage multiple responsibilities, meet deadlines, and work independently with limited supervision.
Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and follow University, school district, and federal grant policies and procedures.
Ability to travel to assigned HEB ISD schools and participate in occasional evening or weekend program activities.

Job Duties

Assist TRIO Talent Search staff in providing academic support, tutoring, goal-setting assistance, and age-appropriate college and career awareness activities to middle school participants.

Assist TRIO Talent Search staff with planning and delivering workshops, campus visits, field trips, family events, and other student-engagement activities. Help prepare materials, facilitate activities, and supervise participants to support safe and successful program experiences.

Accurately document participant contacts, services, attendance, and progress in the program database while maintaining the confidentiality of student information. Communicate with program staff, participants, families, and school personnel as directed, and participate in staff meetings, training, program planning, and evaluation activities.
