Department Summary

TRIO is a group of federally funded programs hosted by the University of North Texas serving various target areas for the purpose of increasing the number of college degreed people in the area. Talent Search is one of the TRIO pre-college programs serving middle and high school programs.

Position Overview

This position is for a college prep advisor who will be located at Braswell High School to recruit for the TRIO Talent Search Program. The candidate will serve approximately 230 Denton High School students assisting them with academic skill development and college/career exploration and choosing a course of postsecondary or career placement. This is a TRIO Talent Search Program position.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in related field and one year of related experience or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Excellent customer service skills. Ability to provide leadership for student employees and volunteers. Experience in networking across departments and programs. Ability to communicate and work with the population. Strong organizational skills and ability to simultaneously execute multiple projects. Excellent verbal and written communication, and computer skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Will give preference to candidates with TRIO experience, either as a professional or participant. Experience with and/or knowledge of the financial aid process. Experience with and/or knowledge of the college application process. Preference given to candidates familiar with the BHS campus or DISD schools.

Job Duties

• Provide information about Talent Search to school administrators, students, and community organizations. Nurture strong working relationships within the school staff. 
• Recruitment and Documentation: Recruit and retain a minimum of 230 eligible participants, providing them with at least 2 Talent Search services per school semester. Document all services and student information into the Talent Search student database, including necessary files and documents as per the TRIO guidelines. 
• Prepare and administer lessons in the areas of academic success, financial literacy, life skills, career and college exploration following the approved TS curriculum guide. 
• Coordinate and participate in college and career field trips or events for participants during the school year and summer. 
• Participate in trainings, staff development, staff meetings and maintain good communication between team members and supervisor. 
• Meet with senior students on a consistent basis to guide them to successful high school graduation, college acceptance, college enrollment and receipt of financial aid, or Apprenticeship placement. This includes assistance in successful completion of college admission test prep, resume-writing, essay-writing, FAFSA submittal, scholarship app submittals and all final steps to secure college enrollment. 
• Responsible for ensuring that TS Objectives are met for assigned student caseload and documentation is accurate.
