Job Summary

$16.40 - $25.18 / hour DOQ; On-call positions available

James City County Parks & Recreation seeks enthusiastic individuals to assist with planning, leading and/or coordinating community special events, neighborhood outreach and other recreation programs as needed; may also assist with program/event logistics, including set-up and breakdown for special events. Must demonstrate the ability to work effectively in a team environment. Year-round and seasonal positions available.

Responsibilities

• Assists with organizing, leading and/or conducting a variety of recreational activities, such as arts & crafts, sports, games, educational program components, etc. for varying age groups and skill levels; oversees program participants; ensures proper set up and/or clean up after programs or events.
• Establishes and maintains rapport with participants, parents, school/facility staff, administrative officials and other community partners; responds to customer inquiries and/or complaints.
• Ensures a safe environment and proper use and upkeep of site facilities, supplies, equipment and vehicles; assists with reinforcing program rules.
• Assists with keeping accurate records/statistics and completing any necessary program paperwork; reports all accidents, incidents and disciplinary actions to supervisor.
• Attends trainings and meetings as necessary; administers first aid or provides participant assistance as necessary.

Qualifications:

• Post offer requirements include a child protective services background check, drug test, and a national criminal / sex offender record check.
• Must possess, or be able to obtain within 30 days of hire, a valid Virginia driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record based on James City County’s criteria.
• May require possession, or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire, First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certifications from the American Red Cross.
• Some knowledge and understanding of instructional procedures and practices; growth and development of different ages and abilities; group facilitation; dealing with difficult and/or emergency situations.
• Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer services including setting and meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
• Skill in use of computer software, especially Microsoft Office Suite; and, arts & crafts, sports and games.
• Ability to work effectively in team setting and with youth, families, staff and community partners and contacts in a professional manner; resolve conflicts and complex problems.

• Performs work in a variety of indoor/outdoor recreation and county facilities; may require ability to travel among various work sites.
• Work schedule varies and is dependent upon mutually agreed upon class, camp, event and/or other program times. Must be able to work flexible schedule, which may include mornings, evenings and/or weekends.
