Represents the Commonwealth in General District, Juvenile and Domestic Relations, and Circuit Courts on all felony offenses, as well as all criminal offenses categorized as Class 1 or Class 2 misdemeanors, that take place in the City of Williamsburg or James City County.
Attorney I: $97,001 - $152,988 / year DOQ Attorney II: $104,024 - $164,222 / year DOQ
Responsibilities
• Provides guidance to law enforcement officers investigating criminal activity. • Participates in Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office sponsored trainings for law enforcement by instructing officers in specified areas of criminal law and the rules of evidence. • Participates in coordinated efforts with law enforcement, social services, and other appropriate community organizations, to maximize community awareness, safety, protection, and response to crime. • Coordinates with the Virginia Attorney General’s office on appeals to the Virginia Court of Appeals and Virginia Supreme Court for criminal convictions resulting from prosecution in the City of Williamsburg or James City County. • Responds to citizen inquiries and requests for information regarding Virginia’s Criminal Code and the criminal justice system. • Records accurate case data information, to be maintained in the office’s case management system. • Coordinates prosecution and services for misdemeanor and felony cases. • Organizes and facilitates community outreach events and presentations. • (Attorney I/Special Crimes Prosecutor/Violence Against Women) Participates as a leading member of Domestic Violence Review Teams for local area; coordinates prosecution and services for cases involving Domestic Violence. • (Attorney II/Special Crimes Prosecutor/Crimes Against Children) Assists in coordinating and directing the multi-disciplinary team on supporting the investigation of child abuse. • (Attorney II/Special Crimes Prosecutor/Juvenile Justice/Narcotics Task Force) Coordinates prosecution and services for juvenile offenders; crimes involving the distribution of narcotics. • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
• Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a law degree from an accredited law school; must be a member in good standing of the Virginia State Bar. • Must possess reliable transportation to work site(s). • Knowledge of law as applied to Virginia criminal law and familiarity with courtroom procedures and familiarity with courtroom procedures. • Strong interpersonal skills are required. • Ability to deal effectively with law enforcement, victims of crime, defense attorneys, and the general public; speak effectively in court and before groups; express legal opinions effectively in writing.
Position Level Requirements:
Attorney I • No additional requirements.
Attorney II • Previous courtroom experience prosecuting criminal cases. • Supervisory experience involving process and/or personnel. • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple caseloads simultaneously, special projects and an elevated level of case types.
