Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Recreation and Community Inclusion Coordinator, the Recreation Leader will perform duties pertaining to the operations of the Recreation Programs and working with vulnerable populations, including the safety and welfare of and for the public. An employee of this class may be required to perform a variety of administrative and recordkeeping duties and has extensive public contact. They may also be required to do some janitorial work, set up and take down related to the operation of the Recreation Programs. The Recreation Leader is responsible for overseeing recreational activities and monitoring participants.

Key Functions/Knowledge/Skills

• Effective communication with participants, staff, and stakeholders to ensure activities run smoothly and everyone is informed about schedules, rules, and expectations.
• Strong leadership skills are essential for guiding and motivating participants and staff, resolving conflicts, and making decisions in various situations.
• Ability to plan and help coordinate recreational programs and events. This includes scheduling activities, arranging facilities, overseeing equipment and supplies, and assisting in special events.
• Flexible and able to adapt to changing circumstances, such as weather conditions or unexpected situations during activities.
• Build positive relationships with participants and staff to foster a supportive and inclusive recreational environment.
• Understand safety protocols and ensure the well-being of participants. This includes knowledge of first aid, CPR, emergency procedures, and risk management.
• Knowledge of recreation games, activities, visual arts, sports, crafts techniques, and/or outdoor adventure skills, etc.
• Develop engaging and enjoyable recreational programs that appeal to participants of diverse backgrounds and interests.
• Collaborate with staff members, volunteers, and external partners.
• Able to identify issues and find solutions quickly and effectively.
• Understand group dynamics and be able to facilitate teamwork, cooperation, and group cohesion to enhance the overall recreational experience for participants.
• A genuine enthusiasm for recreational activities and promoting physical and mental well-being.
• Performs any related tasks as assigned.

Minimum Education & Experience

High school graduation or GED plus one year of experience.
Requires minimum One (1) year experience in sports and recreation activities.

Special Certifications & Licenses

Certifications: American Red Cross Adult First Aid/CPR/AED and Texas Food Handlers (will be required within 90 days of hire paid for by the City).
Valid Texas Driver’s License.

Independence & Judgement

Average judgment: must recognize and resolve problems such as bad grammar, type of procedure to apply, where to refer call or correspondence without specified destination, whether there is a problem/malfunction with a piece of equipment that needs attention, etc.; may involve freedom in the selection of work methods among approved routines, setting of priorities, or sequencing of tasks within established schedules.

Initiative & Ingenuity

Low chance for error because work is routine/repetitive/simple/reviewed carefully; standard procedures: don't have to come up with creative solutions; refers anything unusual to supervisor.

Takes money (registration fees, etc.), gives receipts, handles petty cash, no decision making.

Level & Frequency of Outside Contact

Frequent contact with the public and other organizations; interactions may require obtaining cooperation of people; courtesy and tact are required when dealing with moderately difficult or sensitive issues.

Physical Demands

Light physical effort; may require brief periods of heavy muscular exertion, such as standing, lifting, moving, pulling, pushing, etc. Ability to exert up to 20 lbs. of force occasionally or a negligible amount of energy frequently to lift, push, pull or otherwise move objects.

Responsibility for Equipment & Property

Responsible for assigned equipment/property used outside of office; responsible for handing out to and retrieving property/equipment from employees and keeping inventory: Use of City Vehicle.

Working Conditions

Fair inside or outside conditions; exposure to disagreeable conditions is brief or otherwise insignificant; space problems; only occasional situations that place the employee in a stressful environment.
