Writing consultants work an average of 10 hours per week and may work up to 20 hours per week.

Position Introduction:
The OU Writing Center (write.ou.edu) is a pedagogical service that supports the writing development of both graduate and undergraduate students at the University of Oklahoma. Our services are also open to alumni and members of the Oklahoma City/Norman community. The Writing Center provides support through one-on-one and group consultations, workshops, writing camps, and other writing-based programming. The primary goal of the Center is to help writers learn something they can use in the future. Our staff draws on scholarship from Writing Center Studies, Writing Studies, Higher Education, and other areas to provide feedback that is thoughtful, intentional, and useful. The Writing Center encourages writers to make regular use of its services and to join our staff in meaningful conversations about writing.
Undergraduate Writing Consultants at the OU Writing Center support the work of the Writing Center, the University, and the students at the University of Oklahoma. Through this work, Writing Consultants help to fulfill the missions of 1) providing broad writing support for undergraduate students, graduate students, alumni, and the local community; and 2) creating visibility for the OU Writing Center across campus.
Writing Consultants provide support for the OU writing community both face-to-face and online. The position offers multiple opportunities for professional development, as consultants may assist with special projects, develop and lead workshops, work with community organizations, and present at academic conferences.
Required Education and Experience:
Must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate student in the Fall 2026 Term at the University of Oklahoma.
Hiring contingent upon verification of current student status.
Undergraduate Writing Consultants must be currently enrolled undergraduate students (including incoming transfer students) at the University of Oklahoma Norman Campus
Must hold a status of sophomore or higher and/or have completed two semesters of college-level courses.
Consultants must be available to attend a monthly practicum (staff training) on Tuesday, 9am to 10am, or on Friday, 3pm to 4pm.
All consultants must also be available to work at least one evening (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday) shift or a Friday morning shift.
The OU Writing Center welcomes and encourages applications from students in a variety of academic disciplines and from different backgrounds.
Responsibilities:
Consult with writers in appointments and drop-in sessions in-person and online.
Assist with special projects, presentations, and events as assigned.
Promote the Writing Center through class visits and campus events as assigned.
Engage in ongoing professional development and consultant education.
