Position Introduction:

The OU Writing Center (write.ou.edu) is a pedagogical service that supports the writing development of both graduate and undergraduate students at the University of Oklahoma. Our services are also open to alumni and members of the Oklahoma City/Norman community. The Writing Center provides support through one-on-one and group consultations, workshops, writing camps, and other writing-based programming. The primary goal of the Center is to help writers learn something they can use in the future. Our staff draws on scholarship from Writing Center Studies, Writing Studies, Higher Education, and other areas to provide feedback that is thoughtful, intentional, and useful. The Writing Center encourages writers to make regular use of its services and to join our staff in meaningful conversations about writing.

Office Assistants help perform the administrative support work of the OU Writing Center. The position offers opportunities for skill development and engagement with programs across campus. In this work study position, OAs are also afforded time to work on their own studies when not completing assigned tasks. 

Required Education and Experience:

  • Must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate student in the Fall 2026 Term at the University of Oklahoma. (including incoming transfer students).
  • Hiring is contingent upon verification of current student status.
  • Work study awards are required for this position.

Skills and Responsibilities:

  • Effective and clear communication skills
  • Possess basic computer skills, including using Outlook, Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat, internet-based programs
  • Be a self-starter and self-motivated to work independently and complete tasks as assigned
  • Greet writers and assist with appointment scheduling
  • Perform light cleaning duties as assigned
  • Manage multiple methods of communication, including face-to-face interactions, office email, personal email, Slack, Zoom meetings, and office phones
  • Provide information regarding Writing Center services
  • Keep office spaces clean and organized
  • Assist with special events, such as tabling events (outreach and promotion), Write Nights, and Tasty Tuesday.
  • Have flexible availability, including evening, Friday, and/or Sunday shifts, with the possibility of additional hours for special events
