Postdoctoral Fellowship in Polymers Synthesis and Degradation

The Chemistry Department at Kenyon College in Gambier, OH is seeking qualified applicants for a full-time, post-doctoral position in the laboratory of Yutan Getzler. This position is funded through a Research at Undergraduate Institutions (RUI) grant from the NSF to study controlled polymer degradation. The immediate goal for our NSF-funded program is synthesis and characterization of linear and cyclic polyesters via ring-opening polymerization of commercially available and novel lactones using coordination compounds. Several variants of the novel lactones are in hand on multi-gram scales and their syntheses are well developed. Initial conditions for polymerization of commercially available monomers are established. This position is especially well suited to those interested in pursuing a career as a teacher-scholar at a primarily undergraduate institution (PUI).

Responsibilities

The primary duties of the postdoc will be to conduct research; compile, analyze, and synthesize data; and disseminate results in presentations and scientific publications. In addition to their leadership role in the research project, the postdoctoral fellow will develop the skills necessary to succeed in a tenure-track position at a PUI through collaboration on undergraduate teaching and student mentoring with Dr. Getzler. The postdoc will receive formative feedback on teaching in the liberal arts context from a mentoring committee made up of faculty in the natural sciences, and which mirrors the support offered to new faculty members at the College. This unique postdoctoral experience will involve the early-career scientist in the workings of selective liberal arts college without the additional expectations of service, full-time teaching, and academic advising.

Qualifications

Applicants must have completed their Ph.D. in organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, polymer chemistry, or a related field by the start date of the appointment. Applicants who have not yet completed their doctorate must indicate the date the degree is expected. Applicants should demonstrate evidence of prior research experience and publications, excellent written and oral communication skills, and a strong background in synthesis and characterization. Experience with air-free techniques is preferred. Applicants should have a commitment to undergraduate education, and a strong interest in developing teaching and mentoring skills. This position requires the ability and motivation to work independently and in small teams, to collaborate with faculty and other collaborating researchers, and to help mentor undergraduate researchers.
