Job Summary |
Note: Anticipated start date of Early December 2025 This position, under the general supervision of the EH&S Director, or designee, encompasses the University's compliance programs in: occupational health & safety, environmental compliance, hazardous materials/waste, biosafety, radiation, and DEA regulated chemicals. The incumbent provides support in all campus areas that use, handle, or dispose of hazardous materials including chemicals, biohazards/medical waste, and radioactive materials. Conducts inspections of emergency equipment including eyewash stations, safety showers and fire extinguishers. Works in laboratories, hazardous waste storage yard, and other campus locations assisting in the pick-up of spent hazardous chemicals, biohazardous materials, and radionuclides. Is involved in hazard communication, safety trainings, safety inspections, chemical inventory, chemical spill response, etc. Incumbent will be trained to safely work with all aforementioned materials and assigned appropriate personal protective equipment. Incumbent is required to attend an off campus 40-hour Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) training course to become certified in the management of hazardous chemical waste and safely respond to emergencies. Incumbent will be required to drive university-owned vehicles on and off campus. Other duties may include, but are not limited to data entry, filing, answering phones, greeting customers, making safety signs and labels, posting health & safety information, assisting with fall protection on roofs, reviewing and distributing PPE and sanitization supplies, and completing assigned projects by EHS staff, as needed. Minimum Qualifications |
Ability to learn and perform assigned work; follow oral instructions; work cooperatively with faculty, staff, and other students; communicate effectively with all levels; and read and write English at a level appropriate to the position. Ability to lift 25-90 lbs. with assistance Valid California Driver’s License with a good driving record Basic computer skills (MS Word, Excel, Power Point) Strong written and oral communication skills Availability for 40-hour training (may fall on weekends) Commit a minimum of two years to the student assistant position |
