Job Summary:

The Library Services Specialist supports Circulation operations by providing access to library resources and information at the Service Desk and ensuring building safety and security. The incumbent may support or provide lead work direction in one or more areas, including Course Reserves, Scan & Deliver, Document Delivery, Interlibrary Loan, outreach activities, and student employee coordination.

Duties and responsibilities

Access Services Operations (includes Building Safety & Security, Circulation, Course Reserves, Interlibrary Loan/Resource Sharing, Reference, Stacks Maintenance): Offers direct services to library users and provides lead work direction to Circulation student workers. Independently performs routine circulation functions and collaborates with library personnel in the day-to-day care of the library building. Carry out building opening and closing routines and work evening and/or weekend hours, as needed.

  • Demonstrates thorough knowledge of access services operations, and the ability to interpret and apply unit policies and procedures accurately.
  • Assists patrons with borrowing items, returning items, and resolving account issues using full proficiency in the integrated library system and subsystem modules. Recognizes when to escalate complex account issues to appropriate personnel, accurately recording and sharing pertinent information.
  • Demonstrates effective communication and interpretive skills to assist patrons in locating and using library resources and services (both online and in person); provides directional information, resolves patron problems and complaints, assesses patron information needs, and refers patrons to a librarian for in-depth research assistance.
  • Provides lead work direction to student assistants and participates in recruitment, hiring, training, scheduling, and evaluation.
  • Assists in identifying and communicating potential safety and security issues in the building with Community Service Officers and University Police Department.
  • Assists in identifying and reporting physical plant and custodial issues to facilities and custodial services personnel.
  • Assists with course reserves processes, including scan & deliver, as needed.
  • Assists with interlibrary loan and resource sharing borrowing and lending processes, as needed.
  • Assists with reviewing, revising, and communicating policies and procedures.

Other Public Services Operations:

  • Assists with marketing and outreach for programs, services, and collections.
  • Assists with data collection and compilation.
  • Assists with tours and providing education on CSUSB Libraries’ programs, resources, and services.

Other Classification-Related Duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school or equivalent certification
  • Two to three years of related library and/or clerical experience or an equivalent combination of experience and education.

Required Qualifications:

  • Full proficiency in all technical aspects of work assignments including a thorough knowledge of functional area policies and procedures and applicable work methods.
  • General knowledge of library collection organization and classification scheme and ability to interpret bibliographic records.
  • Ability to interpret library unit’s policies and procedures and apply them accurately in performing work functions, as well as the ability to evaluate procedures and recommend changes.
  • Working knowledge of institution’s and library’s policies and practices associated with the ethical use of and access to library and on-line resources.
  • Basic knowledge of national standards and guidelines pertaining to libraries, including working knowledge of institution’s standards pertaining to copyright and intellectual property protection and the ability to source and apply such policies and standards to avoid potential violations.
  • Full proficiency in the use of automated library system(s) and subsystem(s) pertaining to functional area.
  • Ability to fully utilize standard and non-standard features of various on-line resources and standard desktop software packages, such as word processing and spreadsheets, to perform technical work or assist patrons.
  • Demonstrated problem solving and research skills to address standard and non-standard work problems.
  • General knowledge of library accounting and budget procedures, including the ability to perform arithmetic operations to track and monitor vendor accounts and budgets.
  • Demonstrated ability to compile and present information in an organized manner.
  • Effective communication and interpretive skills to be able to assist in resolving patron problems and complaints, assess patron information needs, and orient and guide patrons in use of library resources.
  • Ability to effectively provide lead work direction and training to student workers and an understanding of employment and payroll procedures related to student workers.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree.
  • Experience working in an academic library.
  • Experience in a customer service situation, preferably in an academic student support setting.

Compensation and Benefits:

Anticipated Hiring Range: $3,915 per month

Classification Salary Range: $3,915 - $7,058 per month

 

The salary offered will take into account internal equity and experience among other factors.

The CSU system provides a comprehensive benefit package that includes medical, dental and vision plans, membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), sick and vacation time, and 15 paid holidays a year. Background Check

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment.  CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information.  Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

The person holding this position is considered a `mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

Campus Security Authority

This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) position under the federal Jeanne Cleary Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act. CSAs are responsible for reporting allegations of Clery Act Crimes reported to them or that they witness. CSA training is required.
