Under the direction of the Manager of Landscape and Irrigation Services in the Department of Facilities Services (DFS), supervises aspects of the Landscape and Irrigation division to ensure an aesthetically pleasing, safe, and clean University environment. Supervises Landscape and Irrigation personnel and oversees relevant horticulture, irrigation, erosion control, exterior furniture and grounds maintenance processes.

Duties

  • Supervises and oversees the activities of Landscape and Irrigation staff for the Malibu campus by using both verbal and written instructions in compliance with the guidelines provided by the immediate supervisor and using independent judgment in instances not covered by the guidelines. 
  • Maintain adherence to safety standards and training for all staff in this area. Provide annual staff written evaluations and ongoing informal evaluations. Use the TMA system to provide work reports and resource use. Attend training seminars and professional development forums related to this position. Assist with planning and assessment of facilities. Provide leadership in concert with the University mission and DFS goals and objectives. Perform regular administrative tasks such as maintaining files, processing paperwork, and entering data. 
  • Ensures that Landscape and Irrigation services meet the needs of the department, the University, and established landscape and irrigation guidelines by scheduling work activities and adjusting workloads to compensate for scheduled and unscheduled absences, changing priorities. Ensures that the quality of landscape and irrigation services meets established guidelines by inspecting the work of landscape and irrigation personnel and directing corrective measures when necessary to meet those guidelines. 
  • Develops an effective team of Landscape and Irrigation personnel by instructing all employees in the proper methods and use of materials and equipment for safe and efficient work performance, evaluating individual performances to meet established standards, providing require performance evaluations on Landscape and Irrigation personnel and making recommendations regarding the retention of new employees. 
  • Assists in hiring qualified employees by participating in the interview process and making recommendations regarding the employment of applicants. Enforces University rules and policies regarding employee conduct by advising Landscape and Irrigation personnel of the University's rules and policies on employee conduct, issuing verbal warnings and written reprimands for violations, and recommending progressive disciplinary action to the immediate supervisor as appropriate. 
  • Ensures that Landscape and Irrigation personnel have the equipment and supplies necessary to perform Landscape and Irrigation services by issuing supplies as needed, completing request form(s) for replacement items, and storing the supplies and equipment in a secure storage facility. Evaluates new landscape and irrigation supplies and equipment by conducting testing of such items and recommending the appropriateness of their use. Ensure proper use of credit card use throughout Landscape and Irrigation by monitoring expenditures. 
  • Advises the immediate supervisor on the condition of University grounds condition by conducting regular inspections of those areas and reporting the results of the inspections with particular emphasis on needed repairs. Ensures that administrative records and reports regarding landscape and irrigation personnel are accurate and current by reviewing employee time cards or monthly time sheets and monitoring employee absences. 
  • Provides continuity of Landscape and Irrigation services under emergency conditions or unique circumstances by performing Landscape and Irrigation duties directly related to the emergency conditions or as the situation dictates. Assists with ensuring that the specified contract services are provided by the contractor by inspecting the work performed and advising the immediate supervisor when shortcomings or other deficiencies are noted. Uphold the Living Pepperdine standards in day-to-day work; participate in Daily Line-Ups and be able to articulate how the standards tie to daily work. 
  • Contributes to a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds. Remains competent and current by attending training and/or courses required by the immediate supervisor. Contributes to the overall success of the assigned department by performing other essential duties and responsibilities as assigned. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Skills and Qualifications

Required: Graduation from high school or its equivalent. Four years of experience in Landscape and Irrigation services, four of which must have been supervisory, which includes knowledge of landscape and irrigation maintenance procedures, equipment and supplies. Strong English written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills. Must consistently project a professional demeanor and positive attitude. Ability to work independently and as a team. Willingness and ability to periodically work overtime hours and respond to emergency calls after hours/weekends. Ability to maintain effective teamwork, high work standards, and good employee morale. Knowledge of purchasing, budgeting, scheduling, record keeping, and good landscape and irrigation practices. Willingness to be on 24-hour on-call status to respond to emergencies. The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds. Basic computer skills and competency with Microsoft Office and Google email. Knowledge and experience using a work order system. Must hold a valid California Driver's license, maintain an acceptable DMV driving record, and remain insurable by University insurance carrier at all times while employed. Must be able to bring a current DMV driving record printout on the first day of employment. Ability to use a desktop computer. Must be able to lift up to 80 lbs and lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 lbs at a distance of 100 feet.

This is a Restricted, Exempt, 40 hour per week position.

Expected Pay Rate: $67,000 per year

The above pay range reflects what Pepperdine University reasonably expects to pay for this position at time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on relevant factors such as work experience, market conditions, education/training, and skill level. In addition to base pay, Pepperdine offers a robust and highly competitive benefits package.
