The Custodian Level II physically completes the various tasks required to maintain assigned buildings and areas, generally, but not exclusively, within the student residential community, in a clean and orderly condition. A person in this position engages in the work of cleaning campus facilities, according to instructions and/or documented best practices. This work includes performing heavy cleaning duties, such as: cleaning floors, shampooing rugs, washing walls and glass, cleaning showers and restroom, cleaning stoves and gas bar-b-que grills, cleaning laundry rooms, emptying all interior trash containers and removing litter and rubbish from building front and rear entrances.

Duties also include reporting any safety concerns or unsafe conditions that require correction, or any other items needing repairs, immediately reporting any accidents or injuries to their supervisor, performing physical work to complete the cleaning of assigned area in the time allotted, advising lead when workload or conditions encountered will cause the assignment to not be completed in the allotted time, and accepting changes in work assignments demonstrating a commitment to flexibility and teamwork. The Custodian II is also responsible for ensuring that all work is accomplished in a safe manner at all times, in compliance with adopted standards, and for striving to produce the best possible results. This includes, but is not limited to, the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (P.P.E.) and the following of safe work practices. Occasionally, the work assigned to the Custodian II requires that person to work in facilities outside of the student residential community, sometimes including traveling to other locations. The work assigned to this position occurs within shared student living spaces. It is imperative that resident students, and their guests, are treated with utmost courtesy and that their privacy is respected at all times. 

Duties

  • Service, clean. and supply restrooms. 
  • Shampoo carpets.
  • Move heavy furniture, equipment, and supplies, either manually or by using hand trucks. 
  • Gather and remove trash from trash receptacles and building areas and deposit in "trash dumpsters." 
  • Clean and polish furniture and fixtures. 
  • Requisition supplies and equipment needed for cleaning and maintenance duties. 
  • Spray insecticides and/or set traps to prevent insect and rodent infestation. 
  • Clean and restore building interiors damaged by fire, smoke, or water, using commercial cleaning equipment, de-humidifiers, etc. 
  • Set up, arrange, and remove decorations, tables, chairs, and ladders to prepare facilities for special events such as banquets and meetings. 
  • Clean windows, glass partitions, and mirrors, using soapy water or other cleaners, sponges, and squeegees. 
  • Drive vehicles as required to complete assignments, including vans, small trucks, or electric vehicles. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 
  • Uphold the Living Pepperdine standards in day to day work; participate in Daily Line-Ups and be able to articulate how the standards tie to daily work. Uphold University mission through work performed.

Skills and Qualifications

Required: High School Diploma or Equivalent. Five years of custodial work experience. Successful completion of a pre-employment physical exam. Training on Safety Data Sheet (SDS) and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Basic knowledge of tools/equipment related to the position, such as a dry/wet vacuum, mop bucket and wringer, and a chemical dispensing unit. General knowledge of safety equipment such as ground-fault circuit interrupters (GFCI’s). Knowledge of operating scrubbers, buffers, waxers, and carpet extractors. Ability to follow verbal and basic written instructions in English.Ability to provide written and verbal instructions in English. Ability to read chemical labels. Ability to operate and maintain related tools and equipment in a safe operating condition. Ability to work as part of a team. Normal mobility and range of motion. Ability to lift objects weighing 50 Pounds, and to carry objects weighing 30 pounds for 100 feet. Willingness to observe strict safety standards including the safe use of equipment and materials. Must have a valid California driver's license and be insurable by the University's insurance carrier. Must be flexible to accept assignments at various campus locations. Willingness to work extended shifts, especially during special events of emergencies. Interpersonal skills, self-starter, innovative. Hard floor & carpet care, including chemicals, equipment, and procedures. Disinfection, including Bloodborne Pathogens and OSHA Clean-Up Protocols. Ability to communicate with supervisor, DFS director, peers and stakeholders with clarity and precision. Ability to utilize independent problem-solving skills without direct supervision, including prioritizing various unscheduled response calls.

Preferred: Custodial experience in a university setting; certification by a recognized cleaning institution. Floor care certification by a recognized cleaning institution.

This is a Regular, Nonexempt, 40 hour per week position.

Expected Pay Range: $19.80 - $22.00 per hour 

The above pay range reflects what Pepperdine University reasonably expects to pay for this position at time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on relevant factors such as work experience, market conditions, education/training, and skill level. In addition to base pay, Pepperdine offers a robust and highly competitive benefits package.
