The Registered Nurse (RN) is a skilled healthcare professional who coordinates and implements a variety of medical back-office duties and procedures. Reporting directly to the Medical Director, the RN serves as the first line of support for practitioner staff and is responsible for the professional and efficient daily operation of the medical clinic’s back office. The RN ensures that county, state, and federal medical office mandates are implemented in collaboration with providers and staff, delivering high-quality, patient-centered nursing care while actively supporting the University’s Christian mission.

Duties

  • Clinical Care & Routine Back Office Procedures: Serve as triage nurse evaluating the needs of students presenting as emergencies, walk-ins, or on the telephone; provide first aid and evaluate routine episodic problems not needing physician or physician assistant attention, seeking medical input as needed. Instruct and prepare patients for examination and diagnostic procedures; assist in examinations and special procedures, including minor surgery, orthopedic applications, centrifuging, autoclaving, and other special studies/tasks. Perform core nursing duties including phlebotomy, injections, ear lavage, bandaging, splinting, and other related clinical procedures. Assure reliance of in-house test procedures and ensure the adequate handling, processing, and documentation of lab specimens to be sent to outside laboratories. Track and advise patients of lab and study results after receiving the appropriate medical practitioner approval and advice.
  • Patient Education & Program Implementation: Explain procedures, medications, and other medical-related matters to students; provide individualized health education and maintain accurate, updated Electronic Health Record (EHR) patient education handouts. Participate in and oversee various health promotion outreach programs with an emphasis on college health; collaborate with Student Health Center (SHC) staff to plan and facilitate vaccine clinics. Provide dedicated nursing care for at-risk patients, including those with disordered eating and/or chronic underlying conditions, immediately reporting abnormal vital signs and assessments to clinical leadership. Provide specialized health education, appropriate immunizations, and prophylaxis protocols for the travel medicine program.
  • Clinic Operations, Risk Management & Compliance: Maintain biohazard waste material consistent with state and federal regulations; participate in the biohazardous chemical/waste workflows and maintain a complete, updated listing of Safety Data Sheets (SDS). Confirm all exam rooms are well-stocked and equipment is functional; conduct and coordinate annual calibration of back-office equipment performed by outside vendors; assure laboratory workspace is in compliance with OSHA/CLIA standards. Assist the Clinic and Medical Director in ongoing emergency preparedness; serve on the Residential Emergency Response Team (RERT) and SHC Emergency Response Team, providing overnight assistance if necessary and safe to do so. Manage specific tasks, charting, and messages within the Electronic Health Records (EHR) system in compliance with HIPAA standards.
  • Administration & Professional Collaboration: Assist back-office personnel (including MAs and part-time RNs) in adhering to clinical policies, procedures, and government regulations; assist in the recruitment of nurses and back-office personnel as requested by leadership. Ensure coverage for absent team members and address urgent messages. Maintain employee immunization records, including managing the annual update of staff immunizations. Participate in Student Health Center committees focused on implementing and monitoring evidence-based healthcare practices. Attend a variety of professional meetings as a representative of the Student Health Center to maintain current knowledge of nursing best practices; serve on campus committees as designated.
  • Medication Management: Monitor the clinic dispensary, including identification of low or expired inventory, and communicate with the Nurse Lead for ordering and reconciliation of medications. Properly dispose of expired drugs and advise the front office of any and all changes in products and costs. Safely distribute pre-packaged medications and administer treatments in strict accordance with provider orders or approved institutional Standardized Procedures; deliver vital patient education regarding drug interactions and side effects.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Skills and Qualifications

Required:

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with an academic degree in nursing (Bachelor's or Master's degree) and 2 years of related experience.
  • Valid, unrestricted California Board of Registered Nursing license.
  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate.
  • Nursing duties to include procedures such as phlebotomy, immunizations, injections, ear lavage, bandaging, splinting, etc.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills with the ability to translate technical medical information into understandable formats for patient care.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment; highly organized with excellent time management skills and the ability to maintain professionalism amidst competing demands.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise cultural competency, good judgment, and strict confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA standards.
  • Strong sense of personal accountability; high reliability and commitment to consistent attendance and teamwork to meet daily clinical goals.
  • The Registered Nurse must have a personal faith in Jesus Christ, active involvement in a local church, and demonstrate support for the Christian mission of the University-seeking to help students develop lives of purpose, service, and leadership.
  • Working knowledge of Electronic Health Records (EHR) systems, nursing/case management theory, nursing protocols, medical procedures, and standard charting practices.

Preferred:

  • 2+ years of clinical nursing experience.
  • Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) certification.

This is a Regular, Nonexempt, 40 hour per week position.

Expected Pay Range: $47.59 - $56.00 per hour

The above pay range reflects what Pepperdine University reasonably expects to pay for this position at time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on relevant factors such as work experience, market conditions, education/training, and skill level.
