Kenyon College is conducting a search for a qualified candidate to fill the position of Associate Director of Residential Life and Housing Operations. The Associate Director of Residential Life and Housing Operations manages the overall operations of an 1,800-bed campus which comprises 15 residence halls, 7 apartment areas, and 4 houses.
Essential Functions:
- Oversee the implementation of campus housing assignment processes and occupancy management functions, including, but not limited to, housing selection, first-year housing assignments, speciality housing, accommodations, room changes, and damage billing.
- Collaborate with the Coordinator of Housing and Office Operations to manage housing processes, including, but not limited to, move-in/move-out, early arrivals, and break, transition, and summer housing.
- Collaborate with Maintenance to manage residential building repairs and custodial needs.
- Collaborate with the Director of Residential Life and Maintenance to identify residential building and equipment needs for annual repair and replacement process; partner with Business Services, Maintenance, and Summer Events to order furniture and coordinate completion of approved projects.
- Respond to general inquiries by phone, email, and in-person, from alumni, parents, students, and other institutions
- Assist with the coordination and support of College housing operations during campus emergencies.
- Serve as a member of the Office of Residential Life team; develop and maintain mutually supportive and collaborative working relationships with Community Advisors, Furniture Crew, Office Coordinator, Coordinator of Housing and Operations, Assistant Directors of Residential Life, and Director of Residential Life.
- Collaborate with Campus Safety to develop and implement health, safety, and emergency response materials and training opportunities for students, Community Advisors, and professional staff members.
- Partner with the Office of Student Accessibility Services to identify housing assignments for students with approved ADA housing accommodations and/or Emotional Support Animals (ESAs); ensure students with approved ESAs are aware of and follow ESA policies.
- Collaborate with campus partners to coordinate housing needs for New Student Move-In, Commencement, Reunion Weekend, and Summer Events.
- Allocate and administer budgets for damage building, hall enhancements, residential furniture, and outside contractors.
- Supervise and evaluate the Coordinator of Housing and Office Operations.
- Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate a four to six-student furniture crew.
Other Responsibilities
- Assist with designated office, divisional, and/or College committees, initiatives and processes, including, but not limited to advising a Student Council Committee, working with Commencement and Reunion, etc.
- Assist in the implementation and enforcement of college policies and expectations.
- Mediate conversations between students, encouraging various methods of conflict resolution.
- Develop and maintain courteous and effective working relationships with Student Affairs colleagues, faculty, and campus partners.
- Continuously identify and address the developmental needs of students through educational interactions, crisis response protocols, and mediations; advise and provide general support to students.
- Develop meaningful connections with students, staff and faculty by being available and visible on campus.
- Assist, as needed, with Community Advisor recruitment, selection, and training.
- Assist with special projects and other duties as needed.
Working Conditions
Work is generally performed in an office environment, but overseeing the College’s housing operations program and fulfilling duty responsibilities requires being able to navigate between residential facilities, including up and down stairs, moving through long hallways, being in buildings without air conditioning, and being outside in various weather conditions. Must also be able to lift boxes of items up to 30 pounds, move tables, chairs, and other furniture. Requires a valid driver’s license and ability to meet campus requirements to drive campus vehicles, in order to transport students and other items. Must be able to work occasional evenings and weekends, including times when the College is closed; this includes the ability to travel and work during inclement weather or other exceptional conditions. This position does not serve in the professional staff on-call rotation, however, campus emergencies impacting housing may necessitate assistance needed outside of traditional working hours.
Other Details
The Associate Director of Residential Life and Housing Operations reports directly to the Director of Residential Life. This is a 12-month position with some evening and weekend responsibilities.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred.
- Strong sense of organizational and administrative skills, effective verbal and written communication skills required.
- Professional experience working in housing operations and/or residential life experience, including experience supervising student leaders, or professional staff members, is preferred.
- Other preferred qualifications include a familiarity with the values and needs of a small, private, residential liberal arts college, demonstrated cultural competency and commitment to issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion, and an understanding of the unique intersections of identity and the student experience, and a demonstrated interest in working with and mentoring college students.
