Job description:

The Director, Forensic Science Service Tasmania (FSST) provides high level strategic leadership ensuring effective governance and management structures are in place to ensure the delivery of quality forensic science services to Tasmania. The Director is responsible for developing, implementing and driving continuous improvements in the effective management of the financial, human resource, regulatory and governance frameworks that are designed to enhance Tasmania’s only forensic services to government and community. The Director provides strategic advice to the Deputy Secretary, Business and Executive Services and Secretary on the effective delivery of forensic science services in a changing and dynamic environment. The Director operates in an environment where effective frameworks and systems of work are essential for the maintenance of a contemporary forensic science practice that is evidenced by NATA forensic science accreditation.

Duties

  • Ensure continuous improvement in the effective management of the human, physical, asset and financial resources assigned to FSST that support the delivery of measurable improvements forensic science services to Tasmania.
  • Design, develop and implement policies, procedures and systems of work to maintain contemporary practice and quality outputs as evidenced by the maintenance of NATA forensic science accreditation. This includes provision of advice and training for client groups whose activities influence the effectiveness of FSST outputs.
  • Provide high level consultative advice to the Department of Police, Fire and Emergency Management on forensic science issues.
  • Liaise with, develop and maintain strong working relationships with key stakeholders within the Department, other agencies and organisations as appropriate.
  • Provide high level advice to the Deputy Secretary, Business and Executive Services and Secretary on a range of operational and strategic forensic science matters.
  • Participate on departmental, inter-agency and national committees as required or appropriate and represent the interests of DPFEM in relation to a broad range of forensic science matters.
  • Undertake the statutory role and responsibilities of the Responsible Person pursuant to the Forensic Procedures Act 2000.

Essential Requirements

Any relevant serious criminal offence or repeated serious offences over any period, which are not mitigated by additional information, may provide grounds for declining an application for appointment. Such offences would include, but are not limited to:

  • Sexual offences;
  • Dishonesty (e.g. theft, burglary, breaking and entering, fraud);
  • Deception (e.g. obtaining an advantage by deception);
  • Making false declarations;
  • Violent crimes and crimes against the person;
  • Malicious damage and destruction to property
  • Trafficking of narcotic substance;
  • False alarm raising. 

Desirable Requirements

Relevant tertiary qualifications, or equivalent in science from an approved university, or college.

Extensive experience and/or tertiary qualifications in business or management.
