Position Summary

Salary -  $22.02 - 24.47 hourly upon meeting the progression step requirements.  MSU Benefits - Free comprehensive health care for you and your family as well as a 10% contribution toward your retirement; Generous sick, vacation, personal and holiday time; Not Eligible to work a partial remote schedule.  
 
This position will perform a wide variety of logistical support duties, including but not necessarily limited to the following: Move commercial office furniture and equipment both within and between buildings, disassembling and reassembling as necessary. Set up and take down equipment for athletic events, livestock shows, conferences, dances, lectures, concerts, and other special events. Set up and take down staging, displays, bleacher seats, stalls, tables, and rigid and folding chairs. Operate university motor vehicles such as forklifts, vans, tandem trailers, tractors, and trucks, transporting furniture, equipment, and display material both on and off campus. Assemble new and used furniture such as desks, cabinets, chairs, shelving, tables, and modular furniture. Deliver salt to University departments. May lead other employees engaged in moving office furniture and equipment and setting up and taking down staging, seating, and equipment for spectator events. Instruct assigned support employees in work methods and techniques. Provide assistance to clients during events.  Uses extreme caution and care when handling University property. Communicate with campus customers regarding job details and work orders. Must drive University vehicle to perform job duties of this classification. Provides customer service to MSU Community and the public.  Responds or informs supervisory staff of complaints, comments and/or unmet service needs.
 
Regular in-person attendance is required to meet business and customer needs.

Minimum Requirements

  • Completion of high school education or an equivalent combination of education and experience is necessary.
  • Working knowledge and skill in the operation of forklifts, dollies, and other material handling equipment is necessary.
  • May require demonstrated ability to read and interpret furniture blueprints, instructions and manuals.
  • Working knowledge and ability of using common hand tools associated with furniture installation.
  • Possession or attainment of an MSU Forklift Operator's permit prior to completion of applicable probation or trial period.
  • May require working knowledge of animals, agricultural materials, repair methods, equipment and tools.
  • One-year satisfactory work experience as a Laborer III or an equivalent combination of training and experience in set up work is necessary.
  • Possession of a valid Michigan vehicle operator license(s) is necessary.
  • Must drive a University vehicle to perform job duties of this classification.
  • Steady lifting of over 75 pounds is required.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical labor.

Desired Qualifications

Two years experience in furniture assembly or moving company.  Two years experience in loading, unloading, and transporting materials, tools, equipment and furniture. 
 
A creative and innovative lifelong learner with the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse population; able to problem solve within a collaborative team environment; ability to understand different perspectives while utilizing expert knowledge of the technical operations of the job.

Monday through Friday 8:00am to 4:30pm or second shift 4:30pm to 1:00am and may require after-hours, weekend and holiday work.

Drive a university vehicle that does not require a commercial driver's license but does require medical certification.
