Position Summary

The Department of Linguistics, Languages, and Cultures seeks a fixed-term assistant professor to conduct research in the NSF-funded research project “Testing the Three-Stage Model of Second-Language Skill Acquisition”.

The project involves investigating core assumptions underlying skill development in a new second language, such as how learners develop accuracy and fluency in comprehension and production. Specifically, the project focuses on identifying distinct developmental stages in learning second language skills and cognitive mechanisms involved at each stage.

The fixed-term assistant professor will conduct a longitudinal research study, overseeing participant recruitment and data analysis, and participating in the dissemination of research findings regarding the number of developmental stages that characterize adults’ learning of a new second language. Data will be collected on the online research platform Gorilla over six consecutive days. The fixed-term assistant professor will apply Hidden Markov Modeling and advanced statistical techniques to the behavioral data, to address the research questions. Findings of the research will be submitted for publications to an international, peer-reviewed journal in applied linguistics at the end of the grant period.
