In these roles, you will provide high-quality analysis, insights and data-driven advice to support some of NSW's most significant energy, climate change and decarbonisation initiatives. Working at the intersection of policy, data and strategy, you will analyse complex energy market data, develop innovative analytical frameworks, and provide evidence-based insights that help inform government decision-making.

As a Senior Energy Analyst, you will be responsible for leading analytical projects and developing systems, frameworks and modelling/reporting tools that strengthen the department's data and evidence capabilities.

You will work with a broad range of stakeholders across government, industry and technical specialist areas to provide insights into energy markets, emerging technologies, consumer trends and program performance.

The two roles have different focus areas, key responsibilities include:

Role 1 - Energy Market Analysis & Modelling role:

• Conducting applied and statistical analyses, interpreting and analysing electricity and gas market data, including on energy market trends, supply, demand, pricing, market structure, technology uptake and consumer trends.
• Manage and maintain models and the associated datasets of inputs and assumptions to forecast supply, demand and price for the NSW electricity and gas systems to identify implications for NSW.
• Provide evidence-based analysis and recommendations by identifying best practice data model solutions to answer energy policy, program and operational questions, for example relating to the wholesale electricity market, the distributed energy sector, the large- and small-scale renewable energy sectors and the consumer/demand side of the market.

Role 2 - Program Data Management & Reporting role:

• Planning and implementing client-oriented data management, analysis, program monitoring and reporting projects in collaboration with stakeholders.
• Designing and managing data collection, analysis and reporting systems for energy and climate change programs.
• Developing dashboards, performance reporting tools and monitoring frameworks to support program delivery and evaluation.

About You

You are a highly motivated analyst with strong quantitative and qualitative problem-solving skills and a passion for using data to influence policy and decision-making.

You bring experience working with large, complex datasets and can translate technical analysis into clear, actionable insights for a range of audiences.

You will take on the challenge of piecing together incomplete data of varying quality, both quantitative and qualitative, from a domain perspective, and extracting cohesive insights from it.

The following skills and experience are highly regarded:

Role 1: Energy Market Analysis & Modelling role

• Experience with major energy market modelling platforms used in Australia e.g. Plexos.
• Knowledge of national and NSW energy transition policies and regulations.
• Demonstrated ability to learn and apply new analysis and modelling techniques as required.

Role 2: Program Data Management & Reporting role

• Experience in data management and analysis in cloud environments, particularly Microsoft Azure and Fabric.
• Understanding of data management best practices, including data models, star schemas, and medallion architecture.
• Ability to use, or quickly learn, advanced quantitative and qualitative analytics, cloud computing, and corporate AI tools to enhance productivity.

Essential Requirements for both Roles

• Qualifications or relevant experience in mathematics, statistics, engineering, computer science, information management, finance, economics, or another relevant discipline.
• Understanding of local or international energy markets.
• Experience with the following data analytics tools will be highly regarded: Python, R, SQL.
• Understanding of energy markets and data analysis techniques including statistical analysis and use of programming languages is preferable (e.g. DAX, R, Python)
• Experience with data management and visualisation software (e.g. MS Excel, PowerPivot, PowerBI, ArcGIS)
• Experience with performing both technical and economic analysis, including using a range of relevant platforms and techniques.
• Demonstrated ability to learn and apply new analysis and modelling techniques as required.
