General Summary of Position:

The Laboratory Technician (lab tech) will conduct research related to cell-cell communication with a focus on Wnt signaling using fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster) as a model organism. Projects will involve fly genetics, molecular biology, and fluorescent microscopy, and basic protein biochemistry. In addition to research, lab tech will manage the lab, mentor trainees, and contribute to creating an inclusive and supportive training environment.

Essential Job Duties:


  • Perform experiments
  • Analyze data
  • Maintain a detailed record of experimental progress in form of a physical notebook
  • Participate in lab meetings and journal clubs
  • Participate in campus symposia and regional meetings as schedules allow

Lab Management:

  • Maintaining flies
  • Fly food prep
  • Maintaining equipment
  • Establishing lab protocols
  • Oversee EHSO regulations and requirements
  • Ordering and inventory
  • Training other lab members, mentoring students
  • General lab operations

Other Job Duties:

  • Perform research and lab operation duties as needed

Working Conditions:

  • Regular lab schedule. May require occasional travel between campuses to use shared equipment, attend seminars, and attendance at off-site meetings. More details can be found under ‘Lab compact’ on the lab website.

Minimum Qualifications (Required):


  • Bachelor’s degree in biology or a related life-sciences field including solid performance in college-level biology and chemistry lab coursework


  • Previous research experience (in an undergraduate research lab setting, or elsewhere)


  • Strong written and verbal communication
  • Meticulous attention to detail
  • Strong organizational skills in record keeping, multitasking, prioritizing responsibilities, and time management
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively with a team
  • An interest in supporting the work of other trainees through mentoring
  • Enthusiasm for discovery and basic scientific research

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Research experience with any of the following: fruit fly husbandry, genetic crosses, PCR, gel electrophoresis, immunoblots, immunofluorescence
  • Experience with tutoring or mentoring undergraduate students
  • Familiarity with Affinity Designer, Affinity Photo, ImageJ, GraphPad Prism

Additional Considerations:

  • The ideal candidate will commit to at least two years of employment
  • Research at the bench requires flexible schedule, which requires personnel to sometimes come in on weekends or evening, based on experimental need

This is a Grants & Contracts (MTA/GRACE) bargaining unit position, Grade P12.

This position is contingent upon funding. The initial appointment will be for one year with a possibility of renewal based on productivity, successful performance and the availability of funding.
