Responsible for performing technical duties in support of projects associated with structural testing laboratories, mechanical testing laboratories, and/or field monitoring program at Lehigh University, as needed, under general supervision from Lead Engineering Technician(s) and/or Laboratory Operations Manager. 1. Possess an advanced skill set in one or more of the following specialized areas: Welding, Hydraulics, Rigging and material handling, Layout, Fitting, Concrete pouring and formation and Carpentry
*Discuss project requirements, including but not limited to drawings, sketches and specifications, in specialized area(s) with faculty, staff and student researchers and laboratory operations manager and engineering technicians, as needed
*Support engineering technician team in execution of planned operations in support of project requirements in one or more of the identified specialized areas to ensure high quality and efficiency in completion of operations, from planning through setup of testing, execution of testing and dismantling of test setup and associated fixturing

2. Fabricate fixtures, components and specimens for structural laboratory testing
*Discuss project requirements, including but not limited to drawings, sketches and specifications, in specialized area(s) with faculty, staff, and student researchers and laboratory operations manager and engineering technicians, as needed
*Support the execution of preparation steps in advance and execution of fabrication, including but not limited to the following tasks: layout of components, preparation of surfaces and work area, setup of required tooling and equipment, operation of tooling and equipment, adherence to approved drawings, sketches and specifications
*Wear appropriate personal protective equipment to perform the fabrication tasks safely

3. Setup of large, complex test assemblies and repair and situational operation of test machines, hydraulic equipment and other laboratory equipment in structural testing laboratory
*Support the setup, repair and operation of test machines, hydraulic equipment and other laboratory equipment through support actions, such as but not limited to, rigging and lifting of loads, and using overhead crane and forklift to unload and relocate specimens, components and equipment
*Installation, repair, operation of hydraulic actuators and supporting hydraulic equipment as needed in support of laboratory operations
*If repairs are necessary, support the troubleshooting and identification of root cause and required steps for corrective action in order to lead to operational equipment
*Wear appropriate personal protective equipment to perform the fabrication tasks safely

4. Perform technician duties inside and/or outside 12 months of the year in a wide range of environmental conditions: cold, windy, snowy conditions of winter; rain; sun, heat and humidity of summer
*Prepare, plan and execute all tasks in support of accountabilities 1 through 3 either indoors or outdoors, and if outside, under varying weather conditions, as required by the individual task

5. Perform technician responsibilities in support of field test group
*Travel with field group to remote test location, either in or out of state
*Assist faculty, staff and student researchers and laboratory support staff as needed to carry out identified project tasks, which could include, but not be limited to, setup and installation of sensors, operation of man lift, placement and securing of electronic cables and setup and installation of hardware to support data acquisition
*Work at elevated heights using proper fall protection equipment
*Work outside in a variety of environmental conditions

 Special Considerations

The duties of the position do not allow for a remote work option; the employee in this position will be required to work on campus where they can be fully accessible to the Lehigh community.

Will often be required to see, stand, walk, talk, hear, use hands to touch, handle or feel, reach with arms, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, climb or balance, pull or push, work near moving mechanical parts and lift up to 100 pounds

Will often be exposed to electrical hazards, frequent loud noise, work within narrow and or small spaces, frequent vibration, subject to fumes or air born particles, work hazards and extreme non-weather heat and cold

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience; Associates or Vocational/Technical Degree in skilled and/or mechanical trades preferred

One to three years related work experience

Expertise in one or more of the following areas: Welding, Hydraulics, Rigging and material handling, Layout, Fitting, Concrete pouring and formation and Carpentry

Significant attention to detail

Proven ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and a high degree of initiative for bringing tasks to completion

Solid analytical and problem solving skills, ability to work independently

Solid computer skills with experience using word processing, spreadsheet and database software

Solid writing ability and organizational skills

Successful completion of standard background checks including but not limited to: social security verification, education verification, national criminal background checks, motor vehicle checks, PATCH, FBI fingerprinting, Child Abuse Clearance and credit history based upon the requirements of the position
