Are you ready to power your future with a rewarding career in facilities operations? Lehigh University seeks a motivated individual to join our Facilities team as a Boiler Operator Apprentice, where you'll receive comprehensive training to become a skilled boiler operator at our Asa Packer Campus and Mountaintop Campus Central Heating and Refrigeration boiler plants.

Position Number: S71200

This position is a Grade: 8 - 40 with an approximate salary range of $46,870-$56,250 and is subject to change based on experience, skills and qualifications.

Key Accountabilities:

1. Accountability – Training
• Complete assigned training courses, assignments, and tasks within specified time periods
• Training to include but not limited to the following:
• Steam plant safety
• Chemical handling safety, and reading Safety Data Sheets
• Correct and safe usage of hand tools and ladders
• Principles of lubrication
• Basic boiler controls and alarms
• Plant system alarms
• Understand steam, water, gas, and air flow
• Understand the basic operation and purpose of gate, globe, check, ball, relief, and regulator valves
• Understand the purpose, location, flow direction of the plant systems: Steam HP, Steam LP, Condensate, Feed Water, City -Water, LP Gas, Fuel Oil, LP Air, Chilled Water and Tower Condensate
• Understand and read pressure, temperature, level, and vacuum gauges
• Understand the principles of operation and steam/water flow of the basic steam cycle, the deaerating feed tank, feed pump, condensate pump and D Type boiler
• Understand the principles and operation of a centrifugal pump
• Operation of the water softener

2. Accountability - Become proficient and qualified in the following:
• Start and shut down boilers and  centrifugal chillers
• Boiler, and cooling tower chemical testing, treatment, and inventory
• Legibly record parameters of operating plant equipment
• Maintain computer log of plant operations and equipment
• Work with HVAC Technicians to resolve after hours campus trouble calls
• Remote starting and stopping of assigned campus emergency generators
• Monthly inspection of campus emergency generators
• Lock out / tag out system

Qualifications:

• High School Diploma or GED; Associate or Vocational/Technical Degree in Mechanical Trades preferred
• Basic mechanical, math and computer skills
• Written communication skills
• Ability and desire to learn
