Detailed Description:

The Assistant Director of Marketing and Communications serves as the primary marketing and fan engagement leads for assigned athletics programs. This role is responsible for developing and executing sport-specific marketing strategies designed to increase attendance, enhance the fan experience, elevate the USD Athletics brand, and support departmental revenue generation efforts.

In addition to leading marketing initiatives, this position provides secondary support in storytelling, digital content coordination, and limited sports information responsibilities when needed. This role works collaboratively within the External Affairs unit to ensure unified messaging, strong brand alignment, and effective fan engagement across all athletics platforms.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Marketing, Fan Engagement & Digital Strategy

  • Serve as the primary marketing lead for assigned sports programs and secondary support for additional teams.
  • Develop and execute sport-specific marketing plans focused on:
  • Attendance growth
  • Fan engagement
  • Brand awareness
  • Revenue support initiatives
  • Plan and execute game-day marketing initiatives, promotions, and fan engagement activities.
  • Coordinate in-game entertainment, promotions, and student engagement efforts.
  • Assist with departmental initiatives including Kids Club, group experiences, and community engagement programs.
  • Assist with digital marketing initiatives across social media, web, email, and paid marketing platforms.
  • Coordinate promotional email campaigns supporting attendance, fan engagement, and departmental initiatives.
  • Help grow and engage fan databases through digital marketing initiatives.
  • Utilize analytics and audience insights to help guide campaign strategy and performance.
  • Work collaboratively with coaches and sport administrators to align marketing efforts with program goals.

Storytelling & Creative Collaboration

  • Collaborate with creative services staff to develop compelling storytelling content.
  • Identify and amplify stories featuring student-athletes, coaches, and program achievements.
  • Support department-wide storytelling initiatives that elevate the USD Athletics brand.
  • Coordinate with creative staff to ensure consistent messaging and brand presentation across all athletics platforms.
  • Assist in the planning and execution of digital content strategies across social, video, and web platforms.
  • Collaborate on feature content, behind-the-scenes storytelling, and brand-building initiatives for assigned programs.
  • Support creative ideation and campaign development tied to major athletics initiatives and events.

Administrative & External Affairs Collaboration 

  • Assist with department-wide external affairs initiatives and special projects.
  • Support collaboration between marketing, creative services, ticketing, sponsorship, and merchandise units.
  • Assist with event planning, promotional logistics, and operational coordination as assigned.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

  • CPR/first aid certification required within six weeks of employment
  • California driver’s license required.

Special Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be available to work some evenings and weekends due to working home and away events.
  • This position requires occasional travel, including to away events. 

Background check:  Successful completion of a pre-employment background check.

Degree Verification Requirement: Persons offered employment in this position will be required to provide official education transcripts for degree verification purposes. 

Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in Communications, Marketing, or Journalism.
  • Minimum one year of experience in Sports Communications or Sports Marketing required; two or more years preferred.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Understanding of NCAA rules and regulations strongly preferred.
  • Working proficiency with SIDEARM Sports, StatCrew, NCAA Genius/NCAA Manager, StatBroadcast, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe InDesign strongly preferred.
  • Experience with still photography preferred.

  • Understanding of sports and statistics.
  • Excellent skills in the use of specific equipment and tools as identified below.
  • Knowledgeable with video equipment and post production software for video editing.
  • Functional knowledge of video streaming and elements of a live sports video production/broadcast.
Posting Salary:

$5,858.67-$6,000 per month; Excellent Benefits

The salary range provided in this posting reflects what we reasonably expect to pay for this position.  Actual compensation offered or earned is dependent on experience, education and other factors including departmental budget.
