Salary and Benefits

Salary Range: $19.90/hour to $36.02/hour. This position is temporary with a possibility of reappointment.  Working hours vary.

Department Statement 

The Theatre and Dance Department offers classes leading to a bachelor's degree in Theatre Arts, produces its own instructionally-related shows, and operates the University Theatre for campus and community events. Operations are year-round.

About the Position

This is a temporary, part-time position that will assist Theatre Arts with production-related activities such as: scenery construction, lighting, sound, costume construction, stage rigging, scenery painting, prop construction, stage effects, event services, and similar theatrical operations.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in production-related activity such as scenery construction, lighting, sound, costume construction, stage rigging, scenery painting, prop-construction, stage effects, event services, and similar theatrical operations.
  • Perform equipment and system maintenance, as well as, support area upkeep.
  • Some event assignments might require design-quality input to users, especially for lights or sound.
  • Working in the shops and on stage will involve supervising students and student assistants.

Minimum Qualifications

One to two years of experience working for a theater, repertory or stock company engaged in the applicable production specialty such as: costume construction, stage and set construction, lighting production, and/or sound/audio production. This background normally would be achieved through professional training or applicable college coursework and practical experience.

Required Qualifications

  • Knowledge and current skills in one or more specialized backstage operations areas, including: scenery construction, lighting, sound recording, sound PA, stage effects, stage rigging, costumes, makeup, and equipment maintenance, among others.
  • Ability to work with others effectively, especially leading and assisting a diverse group of students and stage users.
  • Experience in the use of carpentry tools (hand and power), lighting systems, sound systems, sewing equipment (hand and machines), stage rigging, effects devices, unitized scenery, welding equipment, fork lift, painting tools, and other equipment as required for theatre and dance production.
  • Valid California Driver's license.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.

Note: There may be contact with hazardous materials.

Preferred Skills and Knowledge

 A bachelor's degree in a theatre or a related field.

Condition(s) of Employment

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including LiveScan, as appropriate), that may include, but is not limited to: criminal records check, verification of academic credentials, licenses, certificates, credit history, professional references and/or verification of work history is required for employment.  Cal State East Bay will issue a conditional offer of employment to the selected candidate, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Unsatisfactory results may also affect the continued employment of current Cal State East Bay employees who were conditionally offered the position.

All background checks are conducted through the university's third party vendor, Accurate. LiveScan is conducted through the University Police Department.
