About the Position

This position will serve as a Biotech Laboratory Coordinator for the Green Biome Institute (GBI). Established in June 2019, the Institute’s mission is to conserve endangered plants through seed banking, propagation, and thorough genomic analysis. The genomic data collected on these critically endangered plants includes DNA, RNA, small RNA, and associated bacteria, viruses, and fungi and will be made freely available to the public. This position will be responsible for hands-on laboratory work and sequencing, laboratory scheduling and budgeting, and representing the Institute to partner institutions, academic centers, companies, botanical gardens, and conservation centers.
Responsibilities
Conduct Experiments
- Obtain samples of plants from Botanical Gardens and from the wild as decided by faculty.
- Isolate DNA and RNA from these samples and use to construct sequencing libraries per established protocols.
- Sequence the samples using MiSeq, Ion Torrent and Oxford Nanopore technologies using existing instrumentation and established protocols.
- Assemble and annotate genomic sequence data using existing software.
- Analyze epigenetic, RNA and microbiome sequence data with existing software and in consultation with faculty.
- Train and direct activities of student research assistants in above procedures as necessary.
- Practice safe laboratory procedures, maintenance, and hazardous waste disposal.
Manage Operations
- Conduct chemical inventories, inspections, and assessments in line with University and College policy.
- Maintain schedules for instrument use and student research assistants’ lab time.
- Reconcile GBI budget monthly with assistance from College of Science office as needed.
Serve as a Liaison
- Conduct tours of the GBI laboratory facilities and answer inquiries from students, staff and faculty as well as external community.
- Contribute to content for GBI materials including websites, flyers and reports.
- Ensure data properly formatted and annotated for deposit in publicly available databases.
- Attend internal project meetings and meetings with external partners as necessary.
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledges and Abilities
- Thorough knowledge of research techniques, including the planning of studies and investigations, determining variables, developing bibliographical and other sources of data, and preparation of research reports.
- General knowledge of statistical principles and procedures, including methods of collecting statistical data, simple correlation methods, time series analyses, analysis of frequency series, sampling techniques, and construction of index numbers.
- General knowledge of sources of information on social, economic and population trends in California.
- Ability to prepare questionnaires and other survey instruments.
- Ability to gather, compile and analyze research data, and to present data in tabular, graphic and pictorial form.
- Ability to prepare and work clear and comprehensive reports.
- Capacity for independent and creative thinking and writing on research and statistical problems.
- Ability to plan, organize and supervise the work of a small team.
Experience
- Two years of progressively responsible experience in technical research or statistical work in the collection, compilation and analysis of data.
- Graduate study in the social sciences, economics, mathematics, statistics, public or business administration or engineering may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
Education
- Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university.
- Additional experience which has demonstrated that the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledges and abilities delineated above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
Required Qualifications
- Ability to perform biological research in a safe and responsible manner.
- Knowledge of and working experience with DNA and RNA isolation techniques.
- Knowledge of and working experience using sequencing equipment and software.
- Knowledge of budgets and basic accounting.
- Ability to communicate effectively in writing to a variety of audiences.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in presentations to a variety of audiences.
- Ability to work with teams of educators and students.
- Ability to use and learn modern office software.
- Ability to reason logically and capacity for independent and creative thinking on research problems.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
- Ability to analyze situations accurately and to adopt an effective course of action.
Preferred Skills and Knowledge
Prefer advanced degrees (M.S. but Ph.D. even more highly considered) in Biological Sciences, Biochemistry, Organic Chemistry, or Computer Science or related fields.
