Work Schedule

Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM; 10/12-month position with July/August as off months. This is a temporary position to end on or before June 30, 2025, with a possibility of renewal on an annual basis if funds and/or program needs exist.

About the Position: 

The Desert Studies Center is a remote field station managed by California State University Fullerton and the seven-campus California State University (CSU) California Desert Studies Consortium. The mission of the Consortium is to encourage the understanding of, and appreciation for, the California deserts by developing student academic skills and public awareness through a desert studies program which includes instruction, research, and special programs. We seek an exceptional individual to join our Desert Studies team as the Desert Studies Lead Cook (Cook II Lead). The ideal candidate in this role should have a positive attitude and an active, energetic mind that is characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to diversity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness.

Under general direction, the Desert Studies Lead Cook plans, organizes, and oversees the preparation, cooking, and dispensing of food; oversees the maintenance of culinary equipment, supplies, and work areas; monitors and orders supplies. The Desert Studies Lead Cook performs more responsible and complex tasks required in preparing, cooking, and serving a variety of food and beverage items; cleaning and maintaining culinary utensils, equipment and work area; assigning work to kitchen users; providing instruction and training to other employees and kitchen users, and solving work problems; inspecting personnel and working areas to assure maintenance of hygienic, safety, and sanitation standards; keeping records and ordering, receiving, inspecting, storing, and inventorying supplies. Other duties as assigned.

Essential Qualifications

Equivalent to one year of experience performing the duties of Cook I – Lead or equivalent to two years of experience in a lead capacity over cooks and/or food service workers with the responsibility for planning and scheduling the preparation, cooking, and serving of meals for at least 250 persons a meal.

Working knowledge of kitchen sanitation and safety measures; food handling sanitation; principles, procedures, and equipment used in the storage, care, preparation, cooking, and dispensing of food in large quantity; methods and procedures used in the operations, cleaning and care of utensils, equipment and work areas; food values; nutritional and economical substitutions within food groups.

Ability to plan menus; lead and instruct others in appropriate methods of food handling and cleanup techniques; communicate effectively; solve work problems; adjust priorities; make necessary changes in duties and methods; and make sound decisions.

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to complete the background check satisfactorily may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.  

License/Certifications

Pursuant to the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, the current Annual Security Report (ASR) is available for viewing at: https://hr.fullerton.edu/risk-management/clery-act/. This report contains the current security and safety-related policy statements, emergency preparedness and evacuation information, crime prevention and sexual assault prevention information, and drug and alcohol prevention programming. The ASR also contains statistics of Clery Act crimes for California State University, Fullerton for the last three (3) calendar years. Paper copies are available upon request at the CSUF Police Department.

 

Notice of Availability of the Annual Fire Safety Report (AFSR)
In addition, pursuant to the Higher Education Opportunity Act, the AFSR is also available at https://hr.fullerton.edu/risk-management/clery-act/. The purpose of this report is to disclose statistics for fires that occurred within California State University, Fullerton housing facilities for the last three (3) calendar years, and to distribute fire safety policies and procedures intended to promote safety on campus.
