Chemistry classes meet during the 8-week summer term from June 16 through August 10. Mandatory TA training occurs the week of June 9. General Chemistry I (CHEM 103) and Organic Chemistry Laboratory (CHEM 344) sections meet in-person. General Chemistry II (CHEM 104) and Analytical Chemistry (CHEM 327) sections meet both online and in-person. Organic chemistry I (CHEM 343) and Organic Chemistry II (CHEM 345) meet online. See Course Search & Enroll for specific meeting times and modalities. Exact section assignments are not finalized until about a week before the start of classes.

Qualifications:
Graduate students with a bachelor's degree in chemistry, biochemistry, or a closely related field are eligible to apply. A minimum of two years of college chemistry is required to teach in our introductory-level General Chemistry courses (CHEM 103, 104, 108, or 109). More advanced chemistry coursework is required to teach beyond the introductory level. Non-native English speakers must have a satisfactory score on the SPEAK test. Those who scored a 26/30 or higher on the speaking section of the iBt TOEFL test or 8.0 or higher in the speaking section of IELTS are exempt from the test. Candidates needing the SPEAK test should email undergrad@chem.wisc.edu as soon as possible to schedule the test. The only remaining SPEAK test prior to the start of the summer term is Monday, April 21, 2025.

Applicants should enjoy chemistry and be eager to share their enthusiasm for the subject with other students! The successful candidate will have excellent communication and time management skills, be able to work with students of diverse backgrounds, be a team player, and be dependable, professional, and willing to learn.
Position Summary/Job Duties:
The summer TA position in Chemistry is a 50% appointment, averaging 20 hours per week over the 8-week term, plus one week of training. TAs are responsible for teaching one or two sections of ~18-30 students depending on the course. Sections may be discussions and/or labs depending on the course assignment. Other TA responsibilities for all courses include attending staff meetings, holding office hours, proctoring exams, and grading. Required training begins Monday, June 9 and continues through Friday, June 13, 2025. If you cannot attend in-person training, you should not apply. To teach online CHEM 104, CHEM 327, CHEM 343, or CHEM 345, applicants must reside in the U.S., preferably in Wisconsin, during the summer term and must abide by a remote work agreement.
