The Faculty of Health is dedicated to being at the forefront of teaching, learning, creating and social development and fostering cutting-edge research and discovery. The faculty places high emphasis on providing students with an engaging learning experience and research that makes a difference and is solution-led. We work closely with industry partners and the government to ensure our courses remain relevant and responsive and our research findings are put into practice.

The Deakin Indigenous Strategy sets goals for Indigenous outcomes under the Deakin University Strategic Plan, Deakin 2030 Ideas to Impact. It guides the development and delivery of Deakin’s guiding plans for Education, Employability, and Research and Innovation and is implemented through enabling and operating plans. Indigenous employment in higher education is lagging in proportion to the Australian population. Addressing this requires an integrated and multi-faceted approach. The Deakin Indigenous Employment Strategy will guide Faculties and Divisions in recruiting, employing, developing and retaining Indigenous staff, recognising their specific contribution and context.

Reporting to the Executive Dean for the Faculty of Health, the Associate Dean, Indigenous will work collaboratively with the Faculty Executive and key roles throughout the University to deliver on the individualised Faculty Compacts and inform future strategy requirements through shaping initiatives, ways of working and cultural requirements. An extensive, well-established network and demonstrated longstanding working relationships with Victorian Indigenous communities is essential for success within this critical, high-profile position. 

 

To be successful, you’ll have:

  • Qualifications and experience commensurate with appointment at Level D-E, including a PhD or equivalent in a discipline relevant to the Faculty of Health.
  • Extensive, well-established network and longstanding working relationships with Victorian Indigenous communities, built on trust, cultural understanding and mutual respect.
  • A demonstrated record of innovation, achievement and quality improvement in teaching to implement sustainable change.
  • A comprehensive understanding of Indigenous communities, cultures and contemporary issues, within Victoria and more broadly across Australia, particularly issues of education for Indigenous Australians.
  • Demonstrated effective leadership with a proven track record of developing and implementing strategies for advancing Indigenous success in education and employment.
  • Strategic thinking and the ability to provide leadership and guidance for the academic directions of the faculty.
  • Strong track record of collaboration with academics, researchers, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, and internal and other external stakeholders.
  • Ability to develop partnerships and alliances with professional, industry and government organisations and with other educational institutions in Australia and overseas in advancing Indigenous learning and teaching innovations.
  • Understanding of the Health sector, established network and working relationships within the Victorian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

 

Special Requirements

  • This position may require the incumbent to travel domestically and/or internationally to attend conferences, events and to represent the university.
  • This position requires the incumbent to hold a current Working with Children Check.
  • Eligible applicants are only persons:

    • who identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.
