The role:

The Accountant, Research supports and assists a designated finance team with a broad range of high-level and complex financial management, reporting and planning responsibilities. Specifically, the Accountant will assist in the preparation of the annual budget and forecast submissions, staff management plans, monthly reporting and reconciliations. The position will apply a high standard, culture and practice for application of research expenditure and subsequent financial reporting and acquittals to ensure activity reflects and is in accordance with grant and contract funding rules, and represents the most efficient utilisation of Deakin resources.

As an Accountant, Research, you will:

  • Collaborate closely with Senior Executive team of the Research and Innovation Portfolio, Institute and Centre Directors, Senior Researchers, Senior Managers (both internal and external to the DVCR portfolio), and Specialist Finance staff/teams within Finance and Procurement
  • Engage in process improvement activities and adopt new ideas to ensure that funding is spent in accordance with strategy and best practice
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with relevant government, industry, funding bodies, higher education institutions, professional and community organisations
  • Develop and implement practical, accessible financial and commercial recommendations and solutions based on stakeholder needs
  • Seek feedback on improvement opportunities from a diverse range of key stakeholders and implement change through appropriate channels and overcomes obstacles to change, including providing support and assistance to develop, co-ordinate and enhance processes and practices for budgeting, forecasting, monthly reporting, long term financial planning and key performance metrics through proactive identification of information gaps and inefficient processes

                                                                                                                                                                                      

To be successful, you’ll have:

  • An equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training
  • Certified Practising Accountant / Chartered Accountant (or studying towards completion) is desired
  • Experience at a senior administrative level in financial administration and related activities, preferably in a University or other large organisation with complex administrative structures, policies and procedures
  • Relevant experience in the preparation and monitoring of complex budgets and performance reports
  • Research grant/contract financial management experience is highly desired
