Job Summary/Basic Function:

Boise State University seeks to hire two contractors to work at the Idaho Department of Water Resources (IDWR) in Boise, Idaho to provide long-term support related to a variety of water projects, programs, and initiatives including the Statewide Water Level Monitoring Program, the Managed Recharge Program, and other IDWR/IWRB projects and initiatives. These positions require a combination of office and field time. Field work may involve multiple days at a time away from Boise and the ability to lift and/or otherwise carry 40 pounds of equipment.

Level Scope:

Fully competent and productive professional contributor who applies acquired job skills, policies, and procedures to complete substantive assignments/projects/tasks of moderate scope and complexity. Works independently with general supervision. Exercises judgment within defined guidelines and practices to determine appropriate action. May provide guidance, assistance, and training to entry-level professionals, support employees, and students
Essential Functions:

The contractor will assist with various IDWR tasks including, but not limited to:

  • Drilling oversight for the construction of new monitoring wells;
  • Conducting groundwater level, lake level, and stream flow measurements utilizing an assortment of devices in a wide range of conditions;
  • Collecting water quality samples from wells and surface water locations, sometimes at remote locations throughout Idaho;
  • Processing, entering, and analyzing monitoring data utilizing IDWR applications and databases;
  • Coordinating with local water users to access sites and to understand regional water issues;
  • Installation, maintenance, and collection of data from a variety of monitoring equipment including transducers and cellular-based telemetry units, and downloading electronic data from data loggers as necessary;
  • Collect geological samples, and GPS coordinates of sampling and measuring locations;
  • Performing data QA/QC checks, and helping maintain data standards and database design;
  • Assist with the analysis of a wide range of data associated with the IDWR/IWRB programs and projects,
  • Responding to inquiries for data and information from a broad spectrum of individuals and entities; and,
  • Developing reports and presentations.  Present findings to local stakeholder groups.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Working knowledge of scientific principles, research design, and research protocols, including analysis and collection of samples.
  • Ability to work as part of a team or independently, both in the field and in the office, as applicable to the position.
  • Ability to develop working relationships with partners and vendors.
  • Experience conducting outreach.
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated time management and organizational skills.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • B.S degree in hydrology, geology, water resources or related field of study and at least 2 years of post-bachelor's work experience in a role that is similar to that of a Research Assistant.
  • Education or demonstrated experience in collection of hydrogeologic data.
  • Education or experience with computerized data management and analysis systems, such as GIS software (ArcMap/ArcPro), spreadsheet software (Excel), and database software.
  • Current Idaho driver’s license or able to obtain upon hire.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • M.S. in hydrology, geology, water resources or related field of study.
  • Experience with water quality sampling and data analysis.
  • Experience with installation of dataloggers and use of high-accuracy GPS.
  • Knowledge of database design and maintenance best practices.
  • Experience with web development (ESRI ArcGIS Online, WordPress) and data visualization techniques/software (Tableau / D3).
  • Proficient with programming languages to assist with analyses and web development (Python, FORTRAN, R, JavaScript etc.).
Salary and Benefits:

This position is salaried with a target annual salary of $54,000-$57,000, depending on qualifications.
