About the position

La Trobe University and Cisco have had a long-standing partnership. A key outcome of this collaboration was the establishment of the Cisco Chair of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT), along with the Cisco-La Trobe Centre for AI and IoT in 2020. The Cisco-La Trobe Centre is the first of its kind globally and the only one in Australia dedicated to exploring the intersection of AI and IoT technologies.

This academic position will be based at the Department of Computer Science and Information Technology (CSIT), part of the School of Computing, Engineering, and Mathematical Sciences (SCEMS). SCEMS is one of 10 schools across La Trobe’s multi-campus operations and comprises over 120 academic staff across three departments: Engineering, Computer Science and Information Technology, and Mathematical and Physical Sciences, located in Melbourne (Bundoora) and Bendigo.

The Department is seeking a Level C academic with demonstrated experience in research, teaching, and industry engagement in the areas of AI, IoT, and telecommunications. The successful candidate will serve as Deputy Director of the Cisco - La Trobe Centre for AI and IoT for a fixed term, aligned with the duration of the Cisco - La Trobe partnership agreement. This position reports to the Cisco Chair and the Director of the Cisco Centre. The Deputy Director will work closely with the Director to ensure the University fulfils its commitments to the Cisco partnership. The appointee will also hold a continuing teaching and research position within the Department of Computer Science and Information Technology.

Some of your key duties will include:

  • Conduct and lead innovative and high impact research and produce conference and seminar papers and publications resulting from that research.
  • Obtain external research funding from contracts/grants/consultancies.
  • Play a significant role in research projects including leadership of research teams and/or management of projects.
  • Supervise Higher Degree by Research (HDR), honours and postgraduate students.
  • Report to and assist the Cisco Chair and Director of the Cisco-La Trobe Centre for AI and IoT in fulfilling the University’s commitments to the Cisco partnership.
  • Perform the duties of the Deputy Director of the Cisco Centre, including acting as the Director in their absence, if required.
  • Collaborate with Cisco to scope and design projects and use cases aligned with the interests of both Cisco and the University.
  • Work with Cisco and its ecosystem partners to identify and pursue external funding opportunities.
  • Contribute to the overall leadership and management of the Cisco Centre as a member of the Centre’s leadership team.

Skills and Experience

  • Completion of a PhD or equivalent accreditation and standing recognised by the University/profession as appropriate for the relevant discipline area.
  • A proven track record of research and scholarly achievements in IoT, telecommunications, artificial intelligence (AI), and their applications in various domains.
  • A proven track record of securing competitive external research funding.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate research into real-world applications, align academic outcomes with industry needs, and establish collaborations.
  • Proven ability to lead and manage the accreditation process for academic programs.
  • Demonstrated experience and ability to manage work-integrated learning.
  • Demonstrated ability to articulate joint teaching programs with international universities.
  • Commitment to teaching excellence, focusing on delivering high-quality education and fostering active student engagement.
