Department Summary

Student Activities helps students get connected and involved on campus, to maximize their collegiate experience. Through a variety of events, services, and resources, the department provides students and student organizations with opportunities to connect to the university and to other students. Student Activities promotes a sense of community and loyalty to the University while serving to enhance the social and developmental growth of students as individuals or as members of organizations. It does this by coordinating annual campus-wide events that promote spirit and tradition on campus, supporting the North Texas Spirit program, and providing services and resources to student organizations.

The Coach is a member of the Student Activities team and is responsible for the instruction, direction, and safety of the University of North Texas Cheerleading program. The position reports to the Assistant Director of Student Activities for Spirit and Traditions. While this position focuses on these responsibilities, the primary aim is to foster the mission of the Student Activities, Division of Student Affairs, and University of North Texas.

Position Overview

This position is responsible for the instruction, direction, and safety of the University of North Texas Cheer program. Responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

-Coordinate the administration of the cheerleading program, including but not limited to: purchasing and budget management, coordinating travel, recruiting student-athletes, fundraising activities, maintaining required documentation and program operations manual, monitoring academic progress, and participating in training and meetings as directed.
-Manage the administration and instruction of the North Texas Cheer program in accordance with University of North Texas, American Athletic Conference, NCAA, and USA Cheer rules and regulations.
-Prepare cheerleading routines and choreography for performances and competition and instruct cheerleading student-athletes in the proper techniques of competitive cheerleading, including tumbling, stunting, spotting, etc.
-Plan, coordinate, and provide instruction for tryouts, practices, conditioning, tryout preparatory clinics, and performances at football games, basketball games, camps, competitions, and assigned events.
-Ensure emphasis on safety and welfare of student-athletes during instructional activities (e.g., practices, preparatory clinics), tryouts, performances, and competitions.
-Assess performance and provide instructional coaching towards the goal of improving student-athlete performance.
-Attend practices, football games, basketball games, American Athletic Conference basketball tournament, bowl games, assigned events and performances, preparatory clinics, tryouts, camps, and competitions.
-Work in collaboration with administration to enhance and support university traditions, spirit building events, and the game-week/day atmosphere for all home football games, men's and women's basketball, and other athletic events as needed.
-Develop and maintain relationships with other spirit group personnel to foster an atmosphere of collaboration and camaraderie between spirit groups, and with student-athlete family and alumni to promote program involvement.
-Other related duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Director or Assistant Director.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and at least two years of collegiate cheerleading or dance participant experience and at least one year of coaching experience required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

-Excellent management and organizational skills.
-Knowledge of current trends in cheerleading performance and safety.
-Knowledge of competitive collegiate cheerleading skills, safety, and administration.
-Knowledge of instructional techniques.
-A high level of verbal and written communication skills, coupled with excellent time management skills.
-Ability to understand complex scenarios, make informed decisions, and react appropriately in high-pressure situations.

Experience that provides the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
-Knowledge of University policies and procedures, or ability to rapidly assimilate.
-Knowledge about issues related to student development at the collegiate level.
-Strong attention to detail.
-Ability to professionally and effectively coach and mentor college students.

-Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships.
-Ability to work independently and on a team.

Required License/Registration/Certifications

USA Cheer safety certification (minimally required after hiring)

Job Duties:

  • Attend and actively participate in practices, football games, basketball games, tournaments, bowl games, competitions and other events to support and supervise student athletes during their performances. 
  • Maintains accurate record of equipment, uniforms, and supplies 
  • Organize and oversee fundraising activities to secure financial support for the cheer program, ensuring necessary resources are available for equipment, travel, and other program needs. 
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with spirit group coaches and athletics personnel, student-athlete families, alumni, and other stakeholders to foster a sense of community and support for the program. 
  • Actively engage in recruiting prospective student-athletes, showcasing the program's benefits and opportunities to attract talented individuals to participate in the cheer program at the university level. 
  • Organize and conduct tryouts, assess candidate skills, and select student-athletes for the cheerleading program, maintaining fairness and transparency throughout the selection process. 
  • Oversee administrative operations of North Texas Cheer by communicating with the Assistant Director of Spirit and Traditions to manage all logistical aspects of the program, including scheduling practices, booking venues/spaces, coordinating travel arrangements for events/games/competitions, etc. 
  • Instruct student-athletes in various aspects of cheerleading, including tumbling, stunting, and routines by offering constructive feedback and coaching to enhance their skills and overall performance.

Lifting and Moving objects up to 50 pounds.
Moving about to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another.
Repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands and/or fingers.
Operating motor vehicles or heavy equipment.

Low temperatures.
Outdoor elements such as precipitation and wind.
