Education-Focused Opportunities in the School of Social Sciences

The School of Social Sciences is consistently ranked among the best social science schools both nationally and internationally. As the largest school in the Faculty of Arts and one of the largest consolidated schools of social sciences in the country, we pride ourselves on fostering interdisciplinary teaching and research collaboration. Our wide-ranging undergraduate program and diverse postgraduate degrees in Anthropology, Criminology, Human Geography, International Relations, Sociology, Politics, and Gender Studies are designed to provide comprehensive and dynamic education.

We are now seeking academics passionate about teaching and education to join our team in the role of Lecturer (Education-Focused) in Human Geography, and Lecturer (Education-Focused) in Criminology.

At Monash Human Geography is an integral part of the Human Geography, Anthropology and Development Studies Section. Staff in the program are engaged in teaching, research, analysis, and actions that promote sustainable use and management of natural resources, landscapes and built environments across Australia and around the world. The Section also has particular expertise in climate mitigation and adaptation, and a strong focus on governance arrangements at national, state, local, and corporate levels. Human Geography at Monash runs a major in human geography in the Bachelor of Arts, teaches in the Master of Environment and Sustainability and Master of Business, and is currently expanding its undergraduate offer in climate change. 

Criminology at Monash is internationally renowned for theory-informed, data-driven, and evidence-based research that leads to practice and policy change in local, national, and international contexts. Monash Criminology is distinct in Australia for its consistent success in attracting national and international competitive funding for major research. We strongly support interdisciplinary and impactful research, at local, national and international levels. We are the second largest criminology program in Australia and teach 3000+ undergraduates every year. In addition to a criminology major in a Bachelor of Arts, our students can complete specialist, cutting-edge degrees including a Bachelor of Criminology, and a Bachelor of Criminology and Policing that delivers a unique student experience at the Monash and Victoria Police Academy campuses.

About the Position

In this role, you will design, deliver, and evaluate a variety of teaching activities that actively engage students and effectively achieve learning outcomes. You will consult with students, demonstrating a student-centred approach, and foster flexible, inclusive learning environments. By utilising a mix of teaching and learning technologies, you will innovate teaching practices and design diversified, valid assessments. 

Additionally, you will lead unit and course development, participate in team teaching, and manage relevant administrative tasks. You will systematically collect and respond to student feedback to continuously improve teaching practices. Your role will also involve generating scholarly activity and research outputs that reflect an advanced understanding of educational practice in your field.

You are an inspiring educator with a proven ability to teach effectively, motivating and engaging students to achieve their best. With a strong background in teaching and assessment within a tertiary environment, you bring a wealth of experience and a passion for education. Your expertise in curriculum development, particularly within higher education, ensures that your teaching methods are both innovative and effective.

In addition to your teaching prowess, you are actively involved in scholarly activities and research that inform and enhance your educational practices. Those with a background in corporate sustainability (Human Geography) and technology and crime, policing, and crime prevention, gender-based violence, and penology (Criminology), who have demonstrated excellence in teaching delivery and innovative educational techniques, are strongly encouraged to apply.
