About the Role

As part of the Northern Adelaide Local Health Network, you will deliver comprehensive forensic psychiatric services, working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to assess, treat, and support individuals with complex mental health needs who are involved with the justice system. This role combines clinical expertise with community-based care, ensuring continuity of treatment and improved outcomes for vulnerable populations. This position offers the opportunity to:

  • Conduct comprehensive psychiatric assessments for court proceedings
  • Provide specialist forensic psychiatric assessments and treatment in community settings
  • Collaborate with legal professionals, corrections staff, and multidisciplinary teams
  • Prepare detailed reports and provide expert testimony when required
  • Contribute to service development and quality improvement initiatives
  • Develop and implement comprehensive treatment plans
  • Supervise junior medical staff and contribute to education programs

The Total Indicative Remuneration figure is calculated taking into account base salary, leave loading and superannuation as well as managerial allowances, professional development or any other allowances where appropriate.

About You

You are an experienced Psychiatrist with skills, experience and knowledge of:

  • Clinical assessment and diagnostic skills in complex psychiatric presentations
  • Risk assessment and management expertise
  • Knowledge of mental health legislation and forensic procedures
  • Report writing and court presentation abilities
  • Leadership and mentoring capabilities
  • Cultural competency and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health needs

To be eligible for appointment to this role, you must hold:

  • Bachelor of Medicine; Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) or equivalent
  •  
    Appropriate Specialist Qualifications and registrable with the Medical Board of Australia as a Medical Practitioner with Specialist registration; or another qualification as defined in the SA Medical Officers Award.

A higher degree (MD, PhD) and experience in research or publications will be highly regarded.

Forensic Mental Health - A statewide service that operates as part of the Division of Mental Health for forensic patients and prisoners. 

Mental Health - The Division of Mental Health provides a comprehensive range of public mental health services for youth, adults and older people in northern Adelaide. Services are provided through community health centres and hospitals, and to consumers in their own homes.
