About the role

As a Grant Funded Scientist, you will play a valued role within the Public Health and Epidemiology Laboratory, applying your scientific and technical expertise to support high-quality diagnostic and analytical outcomes. Working within a specialist area of pathogen genomics, you will contribute across the full diagnostic lifecycle — from problem definition and planning through to execution, analysis and reporting. Your work will directly support public health initiatives, with opportunities to contribute data to project progress reporting and service improvement activities.

In this hands-on laboratory role, you will undertake routine and complex diagnostic testing, including data and sample management, bacterial culture and wet lab metagenomic processes. You will prioritise work according to clinical urgency, review results for analytical validity, and provide accurate, timely results in line with established KPIs. Working collaboratively with senior staff and clients, you will also assist with the implementation of new methods and equipment, support training activities, maintain laboratory systems and records, and contribute to safe, efficient laboratory operations that uphold quality, governance and accreditation standards.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will meet the essential minimum requirements for appointment as a medical scientist under the NPAAC framework and bring a strong foundation of scientific capability, professionalism and teamwork to a busy laboratory environment. You will combine sound technical knowledge with a proactive, quality-focused approach to delivering accurate and timely outcomes.

  • Hold an appropriate NPAAC-recognised qualification, including an AQF Level 7 degree in pathology (or equivalent), or an approved associate qualification.

  • Demonstrated ability to perform high-quality diagnostic testing using routine instructions, analytical equipment and laboratory information systems.

  • Strong organisational, communication and time management skills, with the ability to prioritise workloads, meet daily targets and work effectively within a team.

  • Sound knowledge of laboratory principles, quality procedures and research methodologies, with a proactive approach to problem-solving, equipment troubleshooting and confidentiality.
