About the role
As a Bioinformatician, you will play a specialist role in clinical microbial bioinformatics, with a strong focus on metagenomics and pathogen genomics. Working within the Public Health and Epidemiology Laboratory, you will apply your scientific and technical expertise to support diagnostic services, contributing to problem definition, planning, analysis, interpretation and reporting. Your work will directly support public health outcomes through high-quality bioinformatic analysis of pathogen whole genome sequencing data, as well as contributing data to project progress reporting where required.

In this role, you will work across routine and complex diagnostic activities, ensuring results are accurate, clinically relevant and delivered within established timeframes. You will exercise sound professional judgement, review analytical validity, and provide interpretation within diagnostic reports where appropriate. Alongside your bioinformatics focus, you will support broader laboratory operations, including specimen handling, equipment testing and maintenance, implementation of new methods, and participation in training and education activities. Collaboration is key—you will liaise with senior staff and clients to resolve technical or interpretive issues, contributing to a responsive, high-quality laboratory service that supports public health and epidemiological priorities.

About You
To succeed in this role, you will meet the essential minimum requirements for a Medical Scientist under NPAAC guidelines and bring a strong mix of scientific expertise, technical skill and professional capability to a busy diagnostic laboratory environment.

  • Relevant qualifications in pathology or laboratory science, meeting NPAAC requirements for Medical Scientists at AQF Level 7 or equivalent.

  • Strong technical capability to perform high-quality diagnostic testing, use analytical equipment and apply laboratory computing and data systems accurately.

  • Well-developed organisational and communication skills, with the ability to prioritise workloads, meet daily targets, work proactively and collaborate effectively within a team.

  • Sound professional judgement and quality focus, including problem solving, equipment troubleshooting, confidentiality, customer service and adherence to laboratory quality procedures.
