Details of Appointment
This is a permanent day work position working weekdays, 76 hours per fortnight + participation in on-call roster.

Benefits
Salary of $109,099 pa - $114,857 pa. Annual salary increase aligned to increment point within this range where eligible and in accordance with the Correctional Officers Agreement 2023.

Working Environment
Tasmania Prison Service (TPS) has prison facilities located at Risdon Vale, Hobart and Launceston in Tasmania.
There are a number of Superintendent positions working across Men’s Medium, Maximum, Minimum, Operations, Reception, Remandee, and Women’s facilities. The staff working in these positions are rotated at level from time to time.
This permanent position is based at the Risdon Value site. This process will also be used to fill fixed-term vacancies across the state as required.
Risdon only
Our main site at Risdon Vale, houses the majority of prisoners and remandees in TPS custody. Being 15 minutes’ drive from Hobart’s city centre, and closer to a range of local shopping areas. Risdon Vale offers free parking on-site and access to the on-site gym (or head across the road to Risdon Brook Dam for a walk before/after work).
Reception Prisons
Staff based at our reception prisons have a unique corrections career, working in the city centre. Expect to work closely with Tasmania Police Service and Tasmania’s Courts to facilitate a safer Tasmania. This includes working with detainees, remandees and prisoners across prison sites, courts and the watch house. The work is fast and diverse.
Duties
- Administer the operational management of an assigned prison facility or area, ensuring all services are delivered in a safe, compliant, efficient and effective manner.
- Set and deliver objectives specific to the assigned prison facility or area in accordance with legislation, policy and other overarching governance and contemporary correctional practice frameworks including integrated offender management.
- Responsible for ensuring ongoing compliance, service delivery and collaboration with other stakeholders. Including contributing to policy and procedures, undertaking risk assessments and executing facility specific plans.
- Manage the assigned financial, human and tangible resources in accordance with relevant legislation, policy and other governing documents, ensuring all prescribed benchmarks are achieved in an efficient, effective and timely manner.
- Actively manage and engage in performance management and professional development of Correctional Supervisors, Correctional Officers and designated non-uniform staff.
- Role model preferred behaviours and practices of corrections staff, including adherence to personal development milestones, maintaining support of emerging initiatives.
- Liaise and collaborate with relevant stakeholders, including other Superintendents, non-uniform staff and external providers, to ensure all TPS decisions are appropriately considered and executed.
- Responsible for producing and analysing audit and functional performance information, identifying variances that require improvements and developing options to address these.
- Oversee and perform all components of investigations and review, including documentation of such matters in accordance with statutory requirements.
- Represent the Department, of section thereof, in the development, improvement and implementation of collaborative working arrangements for policies and processes, including engagement with Department of Justice staff and external stakeholders.
Essential Requirements*
Qualifications and experience:
- Completion of Certificate IV in Correctional Practice; or
- Equivalent qualification; and
- Completion of Diploma in Leadership and Management; or
- Demonstrated equivalent experience in a leadership or management role.
Progression requirements:
- Most recent performance rating assessed as ‘achieved’ or better
- Completion of Work Health and Safety Awareness module.
- Meet fitness test requirements.
NOTE: Essential requirements apply to permanent appointment and promotion only. Applicants who do not possess the essential requirements may be considered for fixed-term appointments. Fitness test requirements are only required to be met by employees appointed to the Tasmania Prison Service post 1 January 2017.
