With close to 1.5 million lower arm fractures per year in the United States, a newer version of casting could change the medical field drastically.
There are several studies about developing 3D printed cast and prosthetic. Theses studies suggested the final designs in either solid structure or uniform mesh structure without further analysis such as printing time and strength.
Solid structure might be strong enough but could be too heavy and long printing time, and simple mesh structure might not have adequate strength to protect the fracture site during normal activities.
Therefore, the main objective of project is to investigate how altering topology of cast affects strength, deformation and printing time for 3D printed casts and prosthetic, and validate the optimized topology of cast by the mechanical testing.
Many different technologies will be used in the project, such as 3D scanning, FEA, topology optimization, 3D printing, and mechanical testing. |
