Overview:
The Director of Campus Recreation at RMU is responsible for overseeing the comprehensive management and administration of all campus recreation program areas, ensuring they align with the needs and interests of Robert Morris University students. This role involves spearheading dynamic, innovative, and collaborative initiatives, including but not limited to a robust club sports program, fitness and wellness programs, intramurals, esports, and other emerging activities. In addition to program leadership, the Director provides professional guidance and supervision to a team of four full-time staff. They also directly oversee a network of over 20 head and assistant club sport coaches, while directly and indirectly supervising approximately 70 student staff members across various program areas. They provide oversight and lead the scheduling of several athletic and recreational facilities across campus. Essential to this role is the coordination of professional and student staff training and development initiatives, fostering an environment where student staff can acquire transferable life and career skills through their involvement with Campus Recreation. As a leader and role model within the organization, the Director is instrumental in providing leadership development and skills training for student staff, nurturing their growth and development. This leadership role focuses on recruitment and retention of club sport athletes, supports student wellness, and contributes to creating a vibrant student experience. Essential competencies for this position span across various domains, including programming, strategic planning and execution, leadership, fiscal management, risk management, marketing and promotions, administration, scheduling, supervision, event and facility management, and day-to-day program operations.
Responsibilities:
  • Oversee the daily operation of the Student Recreation Center, including the managing, hiring, coaching, devlopment and reviewing of performance of staff.
  • Lead a robust club sports program that boasts over 450 participants and 21 teams annually. Work closely with admissions to recruit incoming students and provide an exceptional experience for participants that supports the retention of club sport student-athletes.
  • Manage budgets for the Student Recreation Center and all intramural and club sports activities.
  • Verify academic eligibility and compliance for intramural and club sport team participants; Plan, implement, and provide oversight for all of the intramural sports and recreation programs for the University.
  • Assist with the administration of student activity programs and collaborate with academic departments, students, and the administration to promote student learning, personal growth, and professional and social development.
  • Facilitate the collaboration among different university departments including Admissions, Athletics, Facilities, Campus Police, Greek Life, Outreach, and others to foster synergistic opportunities.
  • Conduct regular evaluations of department programs and services. Document relevant information in an annual report and outcomes assessment reports as appropriate.
  • Must be available by phone and email after typical business hours. On occasion may need to drive on behalf of the University.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelors degree required. Master's degree in recreation/athletic administration, physical education, business administration, sport management or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of two years of experience at the collegiate level in intramural/recreation sports required.
  • Experience in the organization, administration, and supervision of intramural sports programs and personnel, as well as working knowledge of officiating methods and techniques is essential.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as required.
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification required. Personal training certificate from the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) strongly preferred. Must have a valid driver's license or the ability to have reliable transportation to travel on behalf of the university.
