Assistant Director, Esports and Innovative Programs

Reporting to the Chief Wellness Officer, and integral to the Wellness Team leadership, the Assistant Director for Esports & Innovative Programs will lead all aspects of the University’s large and growing esports program, including, but not limited to, planning practices, game/event preparation, in-game coaching, recruiting, budgeting, scheduling, team travel, academic monitoring, fundraising, streaming, video production, marketing, player/team supervision, and hiring, training, and management of part-time staff. In addition, the Assistant Director will be responsible for leading and/or supporting the design and delivery of various creative programs aimed at expanding participation and increasing collaboration among departments within the Wellness Team and throughout the University. Candidates must have applicable experience in leading others, managing organized programs, and strong familiarity with a wide range of competitive gaming titles including but not limited to League of Legends, Overwatch, Rainbow Six, Rocket League, and Valorant. This position works on-site in the University’s Esports suite, and requires a mix of structured and flexible work hours, including some nights and weekends as necessitated by program activities. Occasional travel may be necessary to support off-campus competitions.
Responsibilities:
  • Team Management: ● Practice planning and organizing for all teams. ● Develop and maintain a comprehensive set of guidelines and policies relating to player recruitment, allowable practice time, class attendance, potential scholarships, and prize winnings. ● Assist team members in improving their skills to become better teammates and competitors. ● Oversee esports students’ academic performance. ● Assist with team discipline as needed, fostering an environment of sportsmanship and accountability. ● Set up teams for league competitions and all other related events or tournaments. ● Handle team’s compliance with University, RMU Club Sports, and gaming league policies.
  • Facility & Operations Management: ● Identify industry best practices as it relates to team structure, practice times, and academic standards. ● Lead in managing a dedicated esports facility and all associated equipment. Lead in the development of rules and regulations for the space. ● Will be primarily responsible for managing staff, coaches, and team leaders for all of the competitive teams.
  • Program Development: ● Support existing programs to maintain player participation numbers, engagement, and achievement. ● Identify areas of improvement and implement modifications as needed. ● Explore strategies for increasing participation numbers, including the development of teams for new games and additional rosters to existing titles. ● Coordinate special events that broaden campus reach and involve participation from the general student body. ● Work cross-functionally with colleagues in other departments to support signature events, and explore opportunities for collaborative programming.
  • Advisement: ● Serve as an advisor to the larger recreational gaming club component of the esports program and assist with efforts to improve and/or expand programming. ● Lead a team of student workers including streaming staff, marketing, social media, and event planning.
  • Recruiting: ● Set recruiting strategy and plans. ● Identify and recruit quality students/esport athletes. ● Coordinate with Admissions staff for the recruitment of prospective students. ● Evaluate students' game performance and award scholarships to incoming students. ● Develop outreach programs designed to raise awareness of the esports program and attract potential participants.
  • Roster Management: ● Maintain a competitive program size of 50 members minimum. ● Recruit and add new/additional student participants to the program each year. ● Establish recruitment relationships with local and regional K-12 partners. ● Monitor academic compliance and eligibility for competitive team rosters.
  • Streaming and Media: ● Lead the streaming and broadcasting for competitive programs. ● Identify, train, and manage the streaming team. ● Develop a strategy for maximizing viewership and social media followership. ● Ensure quality control and compliance for all University-produced streaming and related content. ● Manage inventory of equipment for streaming and casting.
  • Partnerships: ● Maintain and enhance relationships with existing and future partners. ● Identify potential external partners and cultivate new partnerships for the program. ● Collaborate across campus with numerous partners including student organizations, academic departments, and other program/service offices.
  • Budget Management: ● Demonstrate smart financial decisions and stewardship of University funds ● Coordinate purchases of equipment, software/license renewals, and facility repairs or enhancements. ● Manage part-time staffing schedule in-line with assigned budget ● Seek fundraising opportunities through grants, donations, and revenue generating programs such as summer camps.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent required.
  • Three-year minimum coaching experience at the collegiate or high school level. Related experience and education may be considered.
  • Strong communication skills, including in-person, online messaging, email, and documentation.
  • Daily leadership and support at individual and group levels.
  • Must be organized and able to manage multiple tasks, balance priorities, and meet assigned deadlines.
  • Situational awareness and judgment to maintain students’ health and safety, manage player conduct, and foster a positive, encouraging environment.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of a wide array of competitive esports titles with a pulse on industry trends as popular game titles change rapidly.
  • Creative mindset that allows for entrepreneurial thinking, continuous improvement, and expansion or diversity of programs.
  • Data analytics skills that help analyze gameplay outcomes and illustrate strengths and areas for improvement.
  • Preferred to have an in-depth knowledge of streaming and video production.
