Job Description

The Charles E. Via, Jr. Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering (CEE) and the Blackwood Program in Real Estate at Virginia Tech seek applications to fill a faculty position at the rank of Assistant/Associate Professor of Practice. We are seeking candidates motivated to contribute to a collegial, interdisciplinary community in several core mission areas of the university.

The Charles E. Via, Jr. Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering has 79 faculty, and a current enrollment of 320 graduate students and over 650 undergraduate students. The department ranks 10th and 9th in undergraduate and graduate education, respectively, among all U.S. civil engineering departments (USN&WR). With classroom and lab facilities in Blacksburg, Virginia and the National Capital Region of Washington, D.C., the department is one of the largest civil engineering programs in the United States.

The Blackwood Program in Real Estate offers a B.S. Real Estate degree that is a comprehensive, interdisciplinary academic program that builds on strengths in five colleges. The major integrates the material students learn in disciplinary courses such as land development, finance, law, and property management through practical experiences within the academic program. There are nearly 400 majors and over 100 minors, and the degree is ranked 3rd best by Great Business schools and 4th most popular by College Factual.

The primary duties associated with this position will be teaching undergraduate courses offered by the CEE Department and the Program in Real Estate related to the areas of land development engineering, real estate development, land entitlement, and professional and legal issues in civil engineering. However, there may be instances when the person in this position could be called upon to teach in one or more disciplinary areas within the CEE Department. This position is shared equally by the CEE Department and Real Estate.

Required Qualifications

A successful candidate will have an MS degree in civil engineering or a closely related field and relevant professional experience. Candidates with a BS degree in civil engineering or a closely related field and substantial relevant professional experience are also encouraged to apply for this position. The applicant should hold, or have the ability to attain licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE). The applicant must demonstrate professional experience in land development design, real estate development, and project management. A demonstrated knowledge of software tools currently used in these areas is expected (examples include Civil 3D, GIS, and/or BIM or SketchUp) and a willingness to learn and teach new software. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are required – a successful candidate must be deemed an effective teacher at the undergraduate level.

This faculty position will be filled at Virginia Tech's main campus, located in Blacksburg, Virginia. Blacksburg, and the surrounding areas, are consistently ranked among the country's best places to live. A start date would be negotiated with the successful candidate.
