Will design and maintain electrical distribution and substation systems (12,470/7,200 volts).
Responsibilities include designing, writing specifications, preparing cost estimates, managing and coordinating multiple electric utility distribution system projects of varying types and complexity.
Designing, coordinating and directing installation, maintenance and operation activities related to substations, substation control systems, primary and secondary distribution systems, and street lighting systems to ensure a cost effective, safe and reliable electrical system. Provides customer service concerning technical issues. Create safe, step-by-step instructions for the switching, isolation, maintenance and/or restoration of equipment and oversee the performance of these instructions.
• Must have a minimum of at least a four-year undergraduate degree in electrical or power engineering from a nationally accredited institution of higher learning.
• Proficiency with National Electrical Code and National Electrical Safety Code as applied to 12kV distribution systems.
• Experience with AutoCad and/or SolidWorks 3D Solid Modeling software.
• Ability to analyze, resolve technical problems and provide detailed reports to Engineering staff.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Experience using personal computers and a variety of office software.
• Hands-on engineering and design of overhead and underground distribution systems, substation relaying, metering, and control systems.
• Experience with SEL protective relay systems.
• Enhanced experience with SCADA, AutoCad and SolidWorks 3D Solid Modeling.
• Registration as a professional engineer.
• Must have a criminal background check.
• Must have a driver's license check.
• Emergency Personnel.
• Must have an acceptable and safe driving record.
• In addition to emergency calls, on occasion may be requested to work different work schedule to meet department needs.
• Virginia Tech Electric Service (VTES) is an auxiliary organization of Virginia Tech (VT). While the university is the primary customer of VTES, service is also provided to retail customers (residential, commercial, and industrial) in the Town of Blacksburg. VTES receives its bulk power at 69 kv from American Electric Power (AEP) and operates its distribution system at 12,400/7,200 volts with both overhead and underground configurations. VTES is not in the generation or transmission business.
The successful candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check.
