Job Description

Reporting to the Associate Dean for Academic Operations, the Curatorial Assistant supports the Virginia Tech Honors College’s participation in the 2025 Biennale Architecture Exhibition. This position will work closely with the planning committee and the co-curators Anne-Lise Velez and Enric Ruiz Geli to help initiate and implement the exhibition spaces in the Palazzo Bembo and the Marinaressa Gardens in Venice, Italy. This position will also be responsible for procuring visual images, captions, credit lines, and rights for printing and publication purposes as well as scheduling the Summer 2025 programming at the pavilion in the Marinaressa Gardens.

This is a part-time, hourly position restricted to the duration of the Biennale project and would run from October 2024 to December 2025. This is an excellent opportunity for a new professional to gain curatorial experience. A successful candidate would be particularly available to work in the mornings, given the time difference in Italy. This position will also require sporadic international travel to Venice during the academic year and the summer to support planned and emergent on-site needs.

Required Qualifications

Coursework in business administration, public relations, design, social science, or marketing

A U.S. Passport valid through May 2026

Graphic design experience

Experience scheduling and coordinating meetings

Excellent oral and written communication skills

Excellent interpersonal skills

Experience using Microsoft Office 365

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in art history or museum studies or related field

Experience preparing, writing, and editing curatorial texts

Experience working with arts professionals, museum trustees and staff, artists, and the public

Experience working with databases and project management systems

Experience working in an art institution or gallery and knowledge and experience in standard museum and curatorial practices

Experience working at a university

Coursework experience in basic Italian

Additional Information

Job duties include:

Coordinate and correspond professionally with artists, dealers, lenders, art institutions, collectors, and industry partners

Schedule and maintain the exhibition calendar for the palazzo and the pavilion

Assist with the exhibition layout plans for the palazzo and the pavilion in collaboration with the Exhibits Design Lead

Prepare master checklist of exhibition items

Update and maintain accurate records

Assist with the writing, editing, and researching of museum exhibition invitations, artist invite packages, catalog publications, biographic and bibliographic material, wall labels, press releases, and exhibition fact sheets

Coordinate the opening events and round table Coordinate and manage a list of key invited professionals who will participate in the round table in collaboration with the Administrative Lead

Assist the co-curators to manage the impact in Venice during the days of the opening (May 7, 8, 9, and 10, 2025)

The successful candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check.
