Job Description

The Laboratory Specialist will be responsible for conducting a wide range of biochemical assays in support of nutrition and cell biology research. Responsibilities will also include development of new assays. Laboratory work will include sample collection from animals and sample analyses. Analyses that will be performed will include metabolite concentrations and enrichment using GCMS, Western blot analyses, DNA/RNA analyses, and protein expression/modification analyses. Assays may include 1 and 2D gel electrophoresis, PCR analyses, HPLC, enzymatic assays, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

The Laboratory Specialist will also be responsible for laboratory maintenance and management, including inventory and ordering of supplies. This individual will coordinate supervision and training of students on laboratory methods, procedures, and safety protocols. This includes assisting students and other researchers in the completion of experiments and assays, and supervising wage employees supporting research efforts.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in biology, biochemistry, or equivalent level of training and experience to include research laboratory experience; Experience performing laboratory analyses; Experience using laboratory instrumentation; Experience accurately compiling and manipulating research data; Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills; Experience working independently and managing multiple tasks; Highly self-motivated; Experience working with limited direct supervision.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in any of the following areas would be beneficial: Mass spectrometry, GC, HPLC, NMR spectroscopy, mammalian cell culture, or proteomics; Experience managing workers.
