Job Description

The Virginia Tech Coastal Collaborator seeks a creative, quick-thinking, and highly organized individual to serve as a Coastal Resilience Program Assistant. The Coastal Resilience Program Assistant works with the Coastal Collaborator Director and a dynamic team of Coastal professionals and faculty to support a wide variety of internal and external coastal resilience activities and projects including but not limited to field work, partnerships, events, and other coastal related efforts funded by grants through the Virginia Tech Coastal Collaborator (VTCC) which is part of the Virginia Seafood AREC.

The Coastal Resilience Program Assistant will represent the VT Coastal Collaborator at local resiliency meetings and Resilience Adaptation Feasibility Tool (RAFT) meetings and events. They will follow standard procedures and protocol while proactively identifying challenges and taking the initiative to problem solve to ensure the success of programs at the VT Coastal Collaborator. Examples of potential job tasks include design, create and maintain documentation and the web presence, enable and facilitate communications and logistics, conduct research about coastal resilience topics, organize and maintain VTCC file systems and occasional field work.

The Coastal Resilience Program Assistant should be a quick learner with strong independent thinking and decision-making skills, writing skills, and have some background knowledge of coastal resilience and the adaptation economy, sea level rise and flooding issues related to Hampton Roads. The position reports to the Director of the Virginia Tech Coastal Collaborator.

Required Qualifications

Education and experience in Coastal Resilience and Sustainability (may include internships, field work, coursework, etc.). Skillsets: leadership skills, strong independent thinking and decision-making skills, problem solving, outreach or education experience, organization skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Biology, Environmental Science or a related field. Knowledge of sea level rise and flooding issues related to Hampton Roads. Experience with professional communications and marketing.

1. Physical Demands:
a. Travel Requirements: The role involves occasional travel to meet attend meetings and attend workshops
b. Field Work: Occasional participation in fieldwork activities, such as site visits or environmental assessments, which can require walking over uneven terrain, carrying equipment, or working in various weather conditions.
c. Office Work: Standard office tasks include sitting at a desk for extended periods, using a computer, and attending virtual meetings.
2. Environmental Hazards:
a. Weather Conditions: Fieldwork may expose the employee to varying weather conditions, including rain, wind, and extreme temperatures, depending on the location and time of year.
3. Conditional Terms:
a. Job Duration: This role is a 1500 hour wage position located in Hampton, Virginia. It does not include benefits.
b. Conviction/Driving Checks: Conviction checks are required for all non-student hires to ensure suitability for the role.
c. Health and Safety: The employee should adhere to health and safety protocols, especially when traveling or engaging in fieldwork, to ensure personal safety and the safety of community members

The successful candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check.
